Midnight
Episode Location: Midnight, a diamond, "alien leisure planet"
Aliens/Enemies: Unknown
New Characters: Sky, Professor Hobbes, Dee Dee Blasco, Biff & Vale Cane, Jethro, Hostess
Gadgets Used: Unknown
Episode Objective: To visit the diamond glacier, and then to survive and escape the knocking on the bus.
A sapphire waterfall on the planet Midnight: this enormous jewel, the size of a glacier, reaches the Cliffs of Oblivion, and then shatters into sapphires, falling a hundred, thousand feet into a crystal ravine. But Donna Noble would prefer to sunbathe back at the Leisure Palace, so the Doctor boards the shuttle bus to the waterfall, alone...
Except, he's not alone for long.
There's Sky Silvestry, a businesswoman in her 40's, strong, but quiet.
The shambolic Professor Hobbes, full of enthusiasm;
His young assistant Dee Dee Blasco;
Biff and Vale Cane, a nice couple on their holidays;

Their 18-year old son Jethro, a bit of a goth, sullen, moping;
And the Hostess, on duty in the aisle.
All of them are aboard the Crusader 50 shuttle bus as its sets off for the planets big attraction.
This episode is the biggest kept secret of the series! And the less you know before watching it, the more you'll enjoy it.

Its largely a Donna-lite
Its the "low budget" episode.
Features the line "Chicken or beef"
Its the 50th episode to be filmed of New Doctor Who
Donna only appears for the first 2 minutes and last minute. She decides to stay by the pool whilst The Doctor goes on a 4 hour shuttle journey to visit a remarkable sapphire waterfall. But, while Donna is sunbathing and not getting into copious amounts of trouble, bad things are install for the Doctor.
"Writer Russell T Davies takes a beautifully simple concept and turns it into something filled with menace and terror. It's a story that looks at different parts of the Doctor's personality, especially his never ending curiosity, while at the same time showing the risks and danger that that brings.
It also highlights, with Donna not around for most of the story, how important his companion is to him. But the most terrifying part is how it explores how human beings respond when they're under intense pressure."

(Lizo's review)
Donna: You be careful
The Doctor: Taking a big space truck with a bunch of strangers across a diamond planet called Midnight... what could possibly go wrong?!
Ooh! Foreboding words there!
But of course the Doctor needs to settle himself in and have a quick chat to the hostess:
HOSTESS: Enjoy your trip.
THE DOCTOR: Oh, I can't wait! Allons-y!
HOSTESS: I'm sorry..?
THE DOCTOR: It's French, for let's go!
HOSTESS: Fascinating.
Apparently we will hear another Allons-y and a Malto Bene at some point in the episode.

And theres the irony kicking in. What could go wrong?
Well... that for a start...
Looks like the shuttle bus is having a bit of difficulty there. So now our little team of tourists are trapped on a tiny bus in the middle of no where.
Well, at least the Doctor keeps his head.
So now what? Stuck on a bus in the middle of nowhere with only a strange man to rely on? No wonder tempers are raised.
Doctor: If we're going to get out of this, then you need me!
Vale: Oh, like you're so special
Hostess: Two people are dead!
Doctor: Don't make it a third!

Apparently theres a point in the episode which only works if the Doctor is alone. The affection between the Doctor and Donna shines in the couple of minutes they are together at the start and end of the episode.
But, moving on from that, the knocking begins. The knock-knock-knocking on the outside of the bus...
Sky: What the hell is making that noise?
Vale: Its trying the door!
Hobbs: There is no "it"!
Sky: What is it? Just tell me what the hell it is?!

"Get out of there!"

So, according to some review or other "Only Sky seems to know the truth – but as paranoia turns into a witch-hunt, Sky turns the Doctor's greatest strengths against him, and a sacrifice must be made..."
And who is this mysterious Sky, who apparently knows something or other? Well apparently whatever it is that is making the knocking manages to possess Sky... and "terrible things are said"

Lesley Sharp, interviewed on "Loose Women" said that at the end of the episode there won't be a lot left of Sky Silvestry
And although we know theres an alien threat, we don't know what it actually is. But we do know that its effecting the Doctor.

Some lucky people have already seen this episode, and the feedback they give, while sparse, is constantly rewarding. They say Tennant is amazing, and someone kindly gave away this info:
- The first 10 minutes has a lot of humour
- In the early part of the episode, The Hostess uses a very funny line when talking to the passengers
- Rafaella Carra (Italian singer) appears "in all her glory" as part of the in-shuttle entertainment package (briefly replaced by Rose)
- "Doctor, Doctor" is briefly mouthed by someone, via a monitor, but the Doctor doesn't see the message (Rose)
- Klicks
- Fear and paranoia reign supreme. Someone must make the ultimate sacrifice. By C=O's recollection, 10 people are aboard the Shuttle when it leaves. By the end only 6 are left.

from the new info we now know the following
ReplyDeleteTitle: Midnight
Planet: Midnight/Messaline as I said on the basic info thread Messaline could be the real name of the planet midnight.
Midnight=spa planet
on the basic info page I said that midnight and messaline could be the same I mean who would call a planet midnight. secondly the episode midnight takes place on the planet midnight. since it is not episode 6 which is on earth then is has to be episode 8
ReplyDeleteif there were no monsters a whole planet devoted to a spa sounds like a pretty nice place to go.
ReplyDeleteI think the monsters might end up being the aliens at the spa that turn evil or something. In the new trailer donaa says "creatures made of metal, fire and blood" Metal=Daleks
ReplyDeleteFire=Pyrovile
Blood=Spa Aliens
They might be made of blood.
Just a wild guess sorry if i confused u.
yeahh but on the trailer it goes
ReplyDeleteMETAL- Dalek
FIRE- Sontarans
BLOOD- Ood
But your theory mey be right as the BBC only have trailers for them 3 monsters, so they may only use them because no other trailers for other monsters have been made. well not that I know of anyway.
i wonder what happens thats so stressful it makes the doctor and donna want to go to a giant spa.
ReplyDeletemaybe all the shadows and data ghosts and nodes and shit from the library!
ReplyDeletethere doesnt seem to be much information anywhere on this episode. do the BBC have any reason in particular to keep it so secret? does anything important happen?
ReplyDeleteThis episode was originally written by Tom McRae but it was abandoned because it was to similar to another story already in the series. So RTD wrote it sort of last minute and thats probably one reason why there's not that much info.
ReplyDeleteAlso, because its an alien planet, I'm assuming that most (if not all) of it was filmed inside, so there are no set reports.
Excellent site Jess, I would like to know more about this other script that was scrapped do you have any extra info regarding what it was?
ReplyDeleteI'm afrid I don't have any information on it. If I did I would happily post it.
ReplyDeleteThe only things I remember about Tom McRaes episode was that Id had the Doctor featureing a dilemah unlike anything before... and I think he lost the TARDIS.
But to be honest, that sounds like it could be any episode!
I wonder...
ReplyDeleteThe series finales typically end in 2-parters. This is why Utopia surprised us. The first 2 thirds were a regular episode and then they sprung a plot twist on us; nobody was expecting a three-parter!
Doctor Who's going away for a year (even though there are specials), and this finale looks to be huge! Episode 11 looks to tie in with 12 and 13, so I'm pretty sure it'll at least be a two-parter...
But now I'm beginning to wonder if before they leave for a year they'll give us a four-parter with some amazing plot twist at the end of episode 10. If the Doctor's removed from time, maybe it happens at the end of Midnight!
"Chicken or beef" sounds like an air steward/stewardess XD
ReplyDeleteEven though it's more like "Tea or coffee or juice" in real life. Well it was the other day.
a 4 parter would just make it look like they had run out of stories
ReplyDeletecan i just add somthing ?
ReplyDeleteknocking on the wall...
what seperated the doctor and rose in doomsday (metaphorically)
a wall.
rose could hear the doctor because a splinter in the void so maybe its geting bigger.... or maybe pete's world is getting invaded by daleks and rose is knocking at the wall to get to the doctor and falls through this is in episode 1, the last few are said to be set in the same night and this would tie it in. and what if the knocking was the sound of drums you know... tap tap tap tap and its also known as the call to war... time war...?...john simm signed up for two weeks filming in november and was sporting a beard at the bafta's like the masters (old regeneration) so maybe a flashback or john simm has gone completly mad?
enjoy!
TheTimeWarrior
too confusing. most 8 year old have never even heard of the word metaphor
ReplyDeleteSupposedly, Billie Piper appears as Rose throughout the episode sending messages to Donna asking her to tell the Doctor that the Daleks or something else, maybe Davros/the Master? is tearing her universe apart and that she (Donna) has to have the Doctor try to get back. And this wouldn't count as one of the three episodes Rose returns for because when she's talking to Donna, it's more just images, or through a computer or something. Anyway, that's what I've heard. And if the guy who's been posting that quote from the TV movie spams here, I'm gonna find him, hack into his computer, and prevent him from getting to the internet via a nasty virus.
ReplyDeleteSeveral posts up, Anonymous brought up something interesting. There's no information on this episode. Zero. Zilch. Maybe something big is going to happen.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone else find the description of Midnight similar to that place the Master was talking about in Last of the Time Lords with the whirlpools of gold and whatnot? I feel it. The Master's coming back in some form or another.
If Rose has a greater part in this, that's big, too.
I've heard that the next episode is so Doctor Lite that he's not even in it. Or even if he is for a bit...it seems random to start off with him disappearing. His disappearance must take place in this episode.
I'm telling you, it's going to be a legendary 4-parter. One with some random but amazing plot twist in Midnight like the fob watch in Utopia that makes you go. "Holy...crap! No way!"
(But if it isn't, i bet this'll lead into Turn Left randomly like Poison Sky leads into Doctor's Daughter randomly.)
I think it was in Confidential they said that it is in this episode that we find out what is meant by 'there is something on your back' this is also this episode links directly to the last few for a big ol four part ending and this is the doctor light episode too
ReplyDeleteBlackett - You may have got confused, its episode 11 that is the Doctor-lite where Rose returns and we find out about the thing on Donna's back.
ReplyDeletewhoops maybe I did :( sorry dudes!
ReplyDeleteI think something happens at midnight like the knocking
ReplyDeleteOne of the blurbs from somewhere mentioned the "knocking on the wall" could this be someone knocking on the void to get into our world?
ReplyDeletei reckon at the end of midnight the doctor disappears and donna has to try and fly the tardis back to earth which would then lead on to TURN LEFT
ReplyDeleteI've heard that Donna stole the book with her future from the library in the previous 2 part story but she doesn't read it until the end of this episode where it says what the digitalspy guy said: she died when the Racnoss invaded. She confronts the Doctor at the end of this episode about what she has just read, and the Doctor disappears mid-explanation.
ReplyDeleteis the planet actually called midnight? if not then this knocking on the wall probably happens every night at midnight.
ReplyDeleteThe planet is called Midnight
ReplyDeleteLesley Sharp must be the woman in the new trailer who says "It's coming for me." Eeeyikes!
ReplyDeleteIn the trailer shot with the woman saying "It's coming for me," we see incomplete words that say -ADER and CRU-, although I'm pretty sure you can make out an S so it's CRUS-. Thus, the word's gotta be CRUSADER.
ReplyDeleteBut people say the photo's for Midnight. I agree, but...on the door near the screaming lady, there's a white door with a symbol with knobbly things (like pokes with circles on the end). In a later shot of Daleks in a white corridor, there's knobbly gear things coming from the walls that look like that symbol. So maybe the woman screaming's from ep. 12 or 13? Or...maybe the Daleks show up in Midnight. Or maybe I'm just wrong about the resemblance. But the white room with the lady does look similar to the white corridor with the Daleks.
Whatever the case the the next shot of the women who was screaming looks pretty weird, i'm thinking she's maybe been posessed or turned into a zombie or something like that because if you look at her she dosent exactly look normal does she?
ReplyDeletethe screaming woman was beside the cabin door in the airplane. compare the two pictures, the background is the same
ReplyDeleteThe penultimate picture on this page, with the Doctor in a blue light, suggests... Daleks? *shivers*
ReplyDeletethe 2nd(doctor reaching out) and 3rd(mouth wide open) last pictures must be right after each other because the same guy is standing in the background, you can tell its him from his clothes.
ReplyDeletemaybe the woman saying 'its coming for me' is killed and the her body is possesed by the....GELTH!! Which is why she looks weird. And have you noticed the womans eyes look like the old lasts eyes in the unquite dead
ReplyDeleteHmm the light in the doorway of the escape pod looks very much like the light in the doorway of the screencaps for the finale (white room with Daleks) and in the Tudor house with Daleks. Also, the C below the Crus- looks like the Cybus Logo and the knocking on the wall could be the walls of reality, Daleks in the void, or just some new creature.
ReplyDeleteAnyone else think the knocking on the wall is what will take the Doctor befor Turn Left
ReplyDeleteHey - I said this earlier in the CBox, but I thing the antagonists for this episode are the slitheens. My reasons are 1: for some reason BBC made a Monster Files about the slitheen. Why would they do that if they weren't going to be in an episode? 2: When you go to wallpapers, videos, sounds, etc is says COMING SOON 3: There have been no Monster Files about the cybermen, the Master, or any of the other famous Doctor Who monsters. There has to have been a reason for picking them out of the blue. 4: There is a picture of the Doctor Screaming while being illuminated by a blue light. When the Slitheen would unzip, A vibrant blue light would fill the room. What else could make a light like that? I've heard people say the gelth or daleks, but the gelth don't produce light. Nor do the daleks, there eyestalk just has a blue lens. I can't think of any other monster that could produce a blue light.
ReplyDeleteI think (If i recall correctly) the Slitheen monster file was during the first week of the Sontaran 2-parter. These monster files refer to the monster of an episode usually after the episode airs. But the whole Sontaran story wasn't aired yet. So instead of spoiling by putting a Sontaran monster file up that week, they just put a filler in: the Slitheen, a monster we were familiar with.
ReplyDeletealso, if the Slitheen were in midnight, what would they put for the monster files in that episode? maybe there is another alien we do not yet know about
ReplyDeleteI don't think that the Daleks are involved in this episode as in the latest issue of DWM, the blurb for the following epsiode (Turn Left) says that the Doctor and Donna are having a laugh, taking it easy, etc which is the complete opposite of what the Doctor would normally do if there was a threat of Daleks
ReplyDeletePutting in my 2-cents worth (what an odd expression!) I don't think it'll be Slitheen or gelf. It'll most likely be a new alien or some such thing.
ReplyDeleteit has to be a 'blood' alien because donna mentioned creatures of fire metal and blood and blood's the only one left.
ReplyDelete"Sky turns the Doctor's greatest strengths against him, and a sacrifice must be made..."
what's his greatest strength? his intelligence, his compassion..... his good looks lol
"it has to be a 'blood' alien because donna mentioned creatures of fire metal and blood and blood's the only one left."
ReplyDeleteI take it you didn't watch 'Planet of The Ood' ?
by the looks of it, it shows people their worst fear and somebodys is obviously the knocking on the wall
ReplyDeletewhat was blood like about the ood?
ReplyDeleteIn the campfire trailer when Donna talked about creatures of blood, the Ood marched towards the screen.
ReplyDeleteLISTEN EVERYONEE!!! You see the lady screaming? On the door there is a symbol which looks incredibly like the cybermen. I dunnno how that makes a differencebut still...
ReplyDelete- jay-russell
jay-russell, it does look a bit Cybus, but I think it's probably the Crusader Tours logo.
ReplyDeleteI'M SO BLOODY CONFUSED BY ALL THIS SPECULATION!!! To be honest, reading all this speculation turns my brains to shit. Can you all just SHUT UP!!! I know we want to have a good ol' debate about all this, but lets just wait until after Eppy 9 before we start going full-pelt into complete brain-shitting.
ReplyDelete^^
ReplyDeletecalm down its harmless fun, if you dont like it, dont read it
yeah too right, calm down love.
ReplyDeleteyou dont have to read it!
anyway my view is that donna will go swanning off at the beginning, then the doctor goes for a wander(well a little more complicated than that but you know what i mean) at the end of the episode and then he wont be in "turn left" much and donna will and she'll be with rose and all that polava:) cant wait for it though, its going to be fantastic:)
Something big is happening to donna in this one! It said "As Donna's life is devestated" as a caption for turn left. I bet Doctor get's lost and Donna thinks he's not coming back! So she travels the tardis to earth (she can fly, seen in sontaran stratagem) and finds Rose who warns her of the Dalek's! then Doctor come's in and see's the Daleks!
ReplyDeleteHope it's wicked!
Ok I have NO idea what's gonna happen. But great site Jess, brill story, keep up the good work :)
ReplyDeleteMaybe when the Doc goes swanning off Donna has "save the world"thing like in The sontaren strategem??
Nah, nothing happens to Donna in this episode. I don't think she goes into save-the-day mode, she's off sunbathing.
ReplyDeleteNothing bad'll happen to the Doctor at the end either since at the beginning of episode 11, he and Donna are at a carnival.
Of course... I could be wrong!
Rafaella Carra is an italian singer/dancer/actress
ReplyDeleteif that helps
Apparently, Rose, Martha and Donna have to 'get together to control the TARDIS and try to find the Doctor.'
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't seem likely, but if Rose and Martha are in it, that's certainly a good reason to keep the episode such a secret.
Where abouts is the bit where the supposed Cybus logo is?
Could the funny line that the Hostess uses when speaking to the passengers possibly be "Allonsy"????
ReplyDelete""Doctor, Doctor" is briefly mouthed by someone, via a monitor, but the Doctor doesn't see the message"
ReplyDeletecould be rose saying this?
I know what happens in Midnight, including the enemies in it.Although I wont tell you because it will spoil it for you.Wait for next week
ReplyDelete^Aww! Just give us a clue about the enemies!!! Just a little one! + how do you know what happens???
ReplyDeletelets say the enemy in midnight is an entity that has brocken into the shuttle bus and possesed sky therefore causing total havoc inside the bus, which is a clsed space and there is nowhere to run.
ReplyDeleteWell obviously! Everything you've just said is what is blatantly stated by Jess on the page! Its very childish to pretend to be in the "know".
ReplyDeleteif you noticed, most of this was extracted from dwm sorry if i had my opinion on this.no neen 2 b rude!
ReplyDeletethis site is amazing.where do you get all this info jess?
ReplyDeleteThanks! Most of the info is from the wonderful people on the Doctor Who Forum - people who live in Cardiff and see the filming, or some who have "connections" and whatnot.
ReplyDeleteThey're the ones who really deserve the praise, I just take what they say and organize it with pretty pictures.
"Doctor, Doctor" is briefly mouthed by someone, via a monitor, but the Doctor doesn't see the message
ReplyDeleteOUCH!
Most likley to be Rose.
ReplyDeleteHey guy who's seen midnight,
ReplyDeleteare the monsters made of blood? I'm betting they are, or maybe they control's sky's blood? Please tell. I'll pay you with um ......COOKIES!
i think that rose is not in it (although i think she appears on a monitor) and we are introduced to a new enemy. And that it is a single episode with a sort of happy ending
ReplyDeleteanonymous -Im tempted to tell you.....
ReplyDeletebut no.but If you could send 3d cookies via a futuristic e-mail i might.
so here's my idea:
ReplyDeletefrom the trailer, we know that the Doctor and Donna know that rose is coming back.
as bad as this is about to sound, perhaps the banging really is something trying to get in from another universe. we get a few baddies or rose's message comes out wrong at first (dunno here) but i think in the end, the Doc sees rose and she says come find/help me and he gets all teary over that. problem solved and we cut to the part in the trailer where donna says "rose is coming back..."
the doctor proceeds to try to find/help rose but somehow messes up and leads us to turn left
COOKIES ALL ROUND!
ReplyDeleteSO YOU HEARD HIM FOLKS, THE MONSTERS ARENT BLOOD!
UM ARE SMARTIE COOKIES ALRIGHT?
I prefer Rolo cookies.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone else think Biff Cane looks like Dante from Clerks ?
I wonder if he'll say "Iwasn't even supposed to be here today !".
erm.............
ReplyDeleteAll cookies are fine
I wasn't supposed to be here today!
erm.............
ReplyDeleteAll cookies are fine
I wasn't supposed to be here today!
Well it's probably obvious that the message he misses is from Rose like in poison sky. It's starting to get on my nerves how he keeps missing all the signs.
ReplyDeleteTO guy that's ssen midnight,
ReplyDeleteit's me the cookie guy!
Who are the monsters? I'll give yu rolo cookies aswell!
I give you a clue
ReplyDeleteThe monsters are neither fire, blood or metal.
it could be a shadow creature made of gas and sunlight infected by the sun of the planet midnight.
A clue...
could the monster be the Vashta Nerada and they followed the doctor becasue we never find out what happend to them or may be it's a monster that plays ticks with people's and the doctor hears or sees every monster that has scared him the most.
ReplyDeleteOne thing i have noticed though for looking for cules about roses return.
In Silence in the Library river song opens the door there's a blight light like when rose opens the heart of the tardis same thing happens in this episode from what i've seen on trailies maybe when rose can't get him on the monitor the door opens and he see rose has the bad wolf or hears the words bad wolf.
I'm more or likey a 100000000000000000 times worng though has i'm thick hehe
sky silvestrys eyes are different colours
ReplyDeleteHave you noticed that Rose Tyler is in the credits list of doctor who in the Radio Times?
ReplyDeleteIn the picture of the doc standing by the door, there is the name 'Crusader'. The letter 'A' is the only letter to be red in colour. Could that be a subtle hint to a name or something? Adipose? Adam? Ermm, I can't think of any more...
ReplyDeletethese lines i KNOW are said in midnight
ReplyDeletethedoc:Whats that?
Sky:What?
thedoc:sssh listen! sort of knocking?
Also...
possessedsky:The doctor
Donna:yes but where is he? where is the doctor?
and...
thedoc:right then alonsy
hostess:sorry?
thedoc:its french for lets go
hostess:fasinating
find out some more l8ter
I loved this episode. A real scarry one, I was back behind the sofa.
ReplyDeleteI think this is best episode till now.
I loved this episode I thought the Doctors role was brilliant and well done down to the saliva on his chin and the water in his eyes. Great, I hope hes always the doc cos hes the best :P
ReplyDeleteThis is onf of my personal favorites. The acting by David Tennant the the woman who played Sky was absolutely brilliant. I don't think I have ever seen anything like it.
ReplyDeleteA trip to the planet midnight
ReplyDeleteto a sapphire waterfall
donna wouldn't go
as she said in her phone call
Knock, knock, who's there?
nobody knows
the thing is coming closer
people are scared, and it shows
Sky is repeating
everything that is said
what is the creature,
the thing inside her head?
Everyone is frightened
they don't know what to do
should they throw sky out?
should the doctor go too?
The hostess saved everyone
by jumping out the door
now midnight isn't safe
no one can go there anymore
wow Caitilin thats really good did you do that yourself or have you seen it somewhere?
ReplyDeleteOnly 2 more days to go for next episode
This was one of the worst episodes ever i think.
ReplyDeletethanks big david tennant fan! I make one up each week and post it on the episode page. There more rhymes than proper poems really.
ReplyDeleteMidnight was my fave so far and i think it was my sister moyas fave too.
ReplyDeletewell really good job caitilin, did you make one for this weeks, was a bit sparce as far as the doctor went, but still good
ReplyDeletewhat kind of the alien planet is that this planet called midnight not midnight alfer evening and before monring made of diamonds as planet of diamonds because if those midnight creatures are about steal someone s voice one person will repeat and copy you what you said it take anyone voice when anyone is possessed and Queit this is those boring episode ever
