Amazingness

Yes, indeed!
The era of the Doctor's Daughter has past before us! The accumulation of the awaited episode has reached its exciting and climactic end!

So, there wasn't that much on any story arcs really. No Rose, bees, Medusa Cascade or Shadow Proclamation

But, we did get lots of juciness about the Doctor's past and the Time War! Theres also been talk of the idea of creating life as being an arc, so theres another to add to the list"

This episode can now be seen on SurftheChannel here,
And on youtube here, here, and here

Also, I have a question to put forward: From watching the confidentials, I noticed that during the episode clips, it always harkens back to series 1 - theres always lots of Rose and the Ninth Doctor. Were the confidentials always like this (I don't remember to well) or are the clips perhaps leading up to the finale?

maybe jenny reminds the doctor of rose?
i think the time war will be mentioned but if jenny was created when the doctor arrived on messline then she wouldnt have witnessed it would she?

  2. She might have his memories or something, especially if she was created from his DNA or whatever.

Haven't Davies and Moffat both said that Jenny ISN'T a clone or created from stolen DNA, she's his actual daughter though?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Possibly... Recent newspaper reviews don't give that impression though. I suppose we shall see soon!

The medusa cascade may be mentioned if she has the Doctor's thoughts. And the shadow proclomation. ???

  6. AnonymousMay 10, 2008

If she's made from stolen DNA, she's still his actual daughter.

  7. Although I'd love for her to be the actual Doctor's daughter, I'm not going to take Mr. Davies' word for it.

Is anybody else losing faith in the "shadow proclamation" story arc?

Who is it that comes up for the captions in the episode pictures? (e.g: Time Is Relative") They are GROAN-out-loud awfully punny, but often hilarious as well. "Oh What An ATMOS-phere" had me groaning on the floor in pain and laughing my head of at the awful punny-ness. xD

    Is it you, Jess?

  11. Okay, so for story-arcs nothing big!
Though Doctor being god like again (Creating life after 7 days!)

And I'm starting to see a connection between episodes (I think someone already mentioned it)

-PIC: Creating life from human fat tissue

    -FOP: Creating pyrovile from humans

-POTD: Creating an ood from a human

-SS, PS: Creating a martha clone, a new atmosphere

-TDD: Creating a timelord from scratch, creating a new world

    ...

    Series 1:
-Bad Wolf and Parting of the Ways:
    Creating Daleks from humans

    Series 2:
-Rise of the Cybermen and Age of -Steel, Army of Ghosts and Doomsday:
    Creating cybermen from humans

    Series 3:
-Daleks in Manhatten, Evolution of the Daleks:
    Again turning Daleks into humans

-Sound of Drums and Last of the Timelords:
    Turning humans into toclafane

    Series 4: (see above)
-Turn Left, TBA , Journey's end:
Turning Harriet Jones into Daleks again??

got some new story arc theories!-I'm full of them this week!
birth/breeding PiC- adipose were beeing bred by matron cofelia
PotO- ood operations were breeding the ood
TSS/TPS- sontarans were cloning a new army
TDD- well, thats a little obvious the doctor got a daughter!

this ones more a general noticing - the doctor sad he had to give the sontarans a choice then he said to jenny that theres always a choice. strange.

Great episode. What's really interesting though is the little comment DT made right at the end of Confidential. He said that Jenny coming back to life might be important and "leaves a lot of loose ends untied". Could she possibly be back for the finale or in a later season?

I didn't know there was a "Shadow Proclamation" story arc to lose faith in.

  24. After watching it, I went back and read the full 'fear forecast.' These kids disgust me sometimes!

"Hath Peck vanishes into the swamp. "Awwwww!" groan the whole family. "Poor Martha!" says Dad as she weeps. "Poor fish!" Samuel reprimands him. Amy's very sad that Martha's lost her friend. Harry's more concerned for Martha herself: "She must be covered in mud!""

Well, so it wasn't what I was expecting, but I'm glad they put at least a bit more into it than "Well, she has your DNA so there you go."

And boy was I wrong with a good chunk of my predictions and what I thought were the red herrings. Ah well, I'm glad I was at least partially right!

Quite a few bad reactions on various sites for this episode for this episode, but I thought it was one of the best of the season. My one thought; if only we could have every story be a two-parter, we could see so much more development of good storylines and ideas and have twice as much Who each season! This season has had much more of a classic series feel, but a little more build up and suspense would really bring it all home. I'm an American, so maybe I'm spoiled by the 25 or so episode runs of US sci fi like Battlestar and Lost, but only 13 episodes a season? It's not nearly enough of a fix for my favorite show!

    ReplyDelete
  33. AnonymousMay 11, 2008

Hm, so if she's a Time Lady or even half Time Lady, shouldn't Doctor be able to feel that she's alive now? He said before that he could recognize the Master and feel his presence, shouldn't it be the same with her?

And oh yes, Donna "I'm going to travel with this man forever"? Perhaps, instead they could've painted a red sign across her forehead: something really bad will happen to her in the end!

I feel they could've made a much more interesting story, but it could've been worse too, so all in all, I liked it :)

To Jess: is there any way to post Monster file on this site, for those unfortunate of us who can't see it on BBC site? I'll be so, so thankful! If you have some free time, of course.

We have those shows too - Doctor Who still manages to be more popular though. :D

It seems they already struggle through the nine months with time and money to just give us 13 episodes. Looks like any more than that would bust the budget and give the actors no breaks.

On the other hand, if they simply cut off 15 minutes and made it a 30 minute show... they could rearrange the stories to almost 20 episodes. Each episode would be shorter, but then we'd have a longer series which might balance it out... who knows.

    no i like 13 episodes - unlucky 13!!

  36. Agree with anonymous... best episode of this season.

Loved Jenny, and hope to see more of her in future episodes. Great interaction between her and the Doctor, and she really added a new dimension to the Doctor's character... as Martha Jones said, "Now you have something to live for."

Also agree with earlier comments about more multi-part episodes. Classic Who with 4-6 part stories was the bomb. Is the attention span of viewers these days really so short, or is the problem that writers (in general) can't write good in-depth stories that can hold our attention -- instead they tend to rely upon wiz-bang special effects, sex and violence to attract an audience?

In regards to the Doctor knowing whether Jenny is still alive, the Doctor didn't know Saxon was the Master thanks to the signal 'cancelling him out'. Perhaps something in that vain will prevent the Doctor from knowing Jenny survived until later on...

    ReplyDelete
  39. AnonymousMay 11, 2008

or perhaps because she has hisDNA he thinks it's just himself that he's sensing. or his hand or something. maybe the archangel network is still in place just not as a phone network?

    ReplyDelete
  40. AnonymousMay 11, 2008

For the Doctor I assume the past , future, present are the same, so Jenny has always been alive as far as he is concerned.

    ReplyDelete
  41. AnonymousMay 11, 2008

Well, she didn't regenerate. Really, it was almost like she was holding her breath.

Just a thought: What if, like most kids, she decided she needed some time to tool around on her own? That'd explain the lack of regeneration-sort of like what the Master did, but she was able to come back from it.

Anyway, man, that was a great trick. It was all 'Sad Music Time Nooooow' and I admit to having a little dust in my eye and then, bam, the girl wakes up and is off to see the universe.

  43. Okay, I'm convinced now - the story arc for this series is choice.

In The Doctor's Daughter, the Doctor told Jenny there's always a choice.

In The Poison Sky, he went aboard the Sontaran ship with his atmospheric converter because he had to give the Sontarans a choice.

In The Fires of Pompeii, the prophetess foresaw him having to make a terrible choice (whether to save Pompeii? Or... something further along the road?).

    ReplyDelete
  44. AnonymousMay 11, 2008

best episode of the series so far me thinks -

loved jenny and am glad she is still alive - she will definitely appear in the series finale!

when she came back to life my initial reaction was that she regenerated but then i thought maybe bad wolf brought her back to life like she did captain jack?

would explain why she didn't change appearance.

the other thing i have noticed is that the doctor is becoming much more controlling - almost god like....

in the sontaran 2 parter he said he had earned the right to speak for mankind (or summing like that) and in this episode he said 'i am the doctor and im ending this war' - echoing him ending the time war?

    ReplyDelete
  45. AnonymousMay 11, 2008

ooh endings wars yes! i mentioned choice earlier as well i deffo think it'll be important

    ReplyDelete
  46. AnonymousMay 11, 2008

What if Jenny is just Gallifreyan and not a Time Lady. And the breath that she expelled was just a bit of regeneration energy that she got from the Doctor?

  47. AnonymousMay 11, 2008

Something about the episode has been bugging me all weekend. If the humans and hath have just been going like fruit flies and no generation is living for more than a day or two, where did the general come from, because I don't think he popped out of the machine past middle age if everyone else was 20ish. Or did I miss him admitting to being one of the original settlers?

    ReplyDelete
  48. AnonymousMay 11, 2008

I think the between-the-lines story there might be that he was one of the original settlers and had made the story up to keep the soldiers fighting the Hath so he could eradicate them.

Or...it could be as simple as him being older because he *is* the General. Soldiers can be young and fit, but a General needs something a bit different.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Mel,

Perhaps he came from an older person?

    That's just an idea, though.

    ReplyDelete
  50. AnonymousMay 11, 2008

I read somewhere (don't remember, i think some interview) that the machines aren't just for progrenation, they're also clone machines. the general could be a clone of an older man, without the original's knowledge.

as for the story arcs, i think it might be gods. again, can't remember source, but the medusa cascade has something to do with venus. in this episode, it would be the creation myth of the planet. jenny was like, oh good, a female.

I need to move to the uk. i want to see the videos on the bbc website! i know i can probably find them all on youtube, but it's not the same.

    ReplyDelete
  51. AnonymousMay 11, 2008

I remember reading somewhere that 'Doctor's Daughter' was said to have a lasting impact on a Doctor, but also on the continuity of the series. Could mean that she'll be back for the finale or that she'll be a next companion. Either way, it'll be great to see her back!

Not sure about a signal canceling her out, what signal would it be and why? It'll be nice too if Doctor will realize at some point that she's alive, even if she's exploring other worlds somewhere and not with him at the moment.

Did anybody think that Donna was a bit of hypocrite this episode? On one hand she keeps pushing the Doctor to recognize Jenny as his true daughter, on the other she tells Jenny that she isn't real and she, Donna wouldn't have kids of her own this way.

Jess: Thank you so much for Monster files! You're so generous and wonderful!
