It's taken him a thousand years or so, but the Doctor has finally pulled. Yes, the Time Lord is getting a Time Lady...
In Saturday's episode the Doctor meets Professor River Song, played by the lovely Alex Kingston of ER and Moll Flanders fame.
River is an archaeologist from the 51st century and soon makes it clear that she's had a very close encounter with the Doctor in another time. A show source says: "The Doctor introduces himself to River Song, and it becomes clear they've been an item - but in the future."
Eventually romance blossoms and is actually played out over two episodes, reaching a climax (so to speak) next week.
In the past, the Doctor has flirted with his female sidekicks but despite the occasional peck on the cheek they've never gone the distance..
But this is obviously a match made in heaven - Professor Song has her own sonic screwdriver.

ReplyDeleteThis leaves a lot of ideas we can speculate over, is River Song Romana a-la-Fob watch? (although this plot idea been used by both the Doctor and The Master already), perhaps River Song is a post-operative Captain Jack (I somehow doubt this lol), a post-regeneration Jenny but thats surely incest of a sort, or a regenerated Master?
River Song has a sonic Screwdriver, I wonder if the Doctor gave her it in the future?
And remember - Your song must end soon, could it mean time is being rewritten and she is to die?

ReplyDeleteI'm not up on the Mirror much, (being American) but if it's a tabloid-like paper...I'll believe it when I see it, honestly.
It just seems too odd from a writing standpoint to have this big "OMG ROSE IS COMING" scenario, and then dump some random romance on the Doctor right before it's about to happen.
A short, one-shot, never going to last beyond this moment mutual attraction like in The Girl in the Fireplace, sure...but a romance that develops and blossoms over two whole episodes, making said romance pack that much more of a punch?
That just seems like it would diminish the "Rose is coming back" story arc way too much to be real.
As combom said, she isn't a true Time Lady. That's just the reporter playing on words.

ReplyDeleteThis seems to take away from the arc of the series, "She is returning" meaning Rose. And isn't the Doctor thrilled when Donna says, "Rose is coming back, no matter what's happening, isn't that good?" and he says "Yes." I dunno, this takes a lot away from the Rose theme, considering she'll be back in a few episodes.
ReplyDeleteWhat I think is interesting is the fact that Steve Moffat is one of the few Dr Who writers who actually considers time travel an important part of storytelling as opposed to a device simply to move the Doctor about. If River Song had met him in his future - apart from it being a bit Audrey Niffenegger - then surely that's a sign of an involved, intelligent SM script, and a good thing for it? It does add another paradox to the ongoing theme of predestination though.

ReplyDeleteRecall "The Shakespeare Code." The Doctor meets Queen Elizabeth, who calls him her sworn enemy and sics her guards on him. When Martha asks him what he's done to offend the Queen, he replies that he doesn't know - he hasn't done it yet.
Looks like they ran out of things to talk about so they returned to the good old let's make up some DW nonsense routine. (even though occasionaly they do tell the truth)

Having been a fan of The Moff for quite a while now, I can say that not only will it not be a cheap romance, but also that it will somehow connect with the story & add to the character of the Doctor.
As for all you nay-sayers regarding "Rose is coming back" might I remind you that he fell for Madame Du Pompador when he was traveling with Rose! So it negates that argument.
Besides, the Doctor is a Time Lord & his idea of "love" might be much different from the human idea of love.
Well, it's only The Mirror saying it - it's not like it's official yet.

ReplyDeleteIs it that unlikely the Mirror would have seen a preview tape for the episode? I wouldn't be surprised if this was true - it's a very Moffat sort of thing to do, just look at Blink and The Girl In The Fireplace - the latter having happened right in the middle of the Doctor and Rose falling in love, remember? I think I heard that Moffat likes his scripts to stand relatively alone from series arcs. And, like Elizabeth I in The Shakespeare Code, it's something for him to pick up on in Series 5. This also creates a kind of time paradox - who fell in love first, the Doctor or River Song? From his perspective, it's her, but from her perspective, it might well have been him.

Hm, Stephen Moffat likes his story to be stand-alones, but he's got to know about Rose's return. It's possible that it's their way of Rose and Doctor saying good-bye to each other (what with other rumors that she's dating someone in Pete's world). But then why bring her back at all? Just assume she's moving on and so will the Doctor.

Just replying to a quick comment that someone made about the Doc falling for Reinette. I wouldn't say he fell inlove with her. I think he respected the hell out of her, and he had a major crush, and he cared for her, but LOVE? I doubt it ever got that far for him.

I also remember reading somewhere (DWM ?) that the role of River Song couldn't be just played by anybody, they wanted someone good and somewhat famous, so probably implies some significance to the character! Doesn't have to mean love affair, could be she's important in other espects.

If he negates everyhing the Doctor and Rose were to each other by saying "Oh you'll love this girl more", I may have to kill Moffat.
If they bring Rose back only to further break the Doctor and Rose's hearts I may have to kill RTD.
And if they bring her back only to break them up because The Doc has a wandering eye, and Rose has a boyfriend I may have to kill RTD.
Because if they did all those things, (from a Rose/Doc fan point of view) there would be no point in her returning at all, and I would actually prefer she didn't.

ReplyDeleteBecause she knows from having met the Doctor before in her past that their meeting in the library wouldn't happen until his past - and so he wouldn't know her. She's trying not to cause a time paradox by giving away that they meet in his future. Alternatively, as noted, she might have known a future regeneration of the Doctor, and thus would not recognise him at first.
I really hope that Steven Moffat puts an end to this constant need to sexualize the Doctor in one uncommital way or another. Yes, a little personal intrigue and emotion makes for good tv, but a daughter, kissing companions at every other episode.. let it go already.

I'm hoping that if he does have some sort of relationship with her, they got it backwards and instead of being with Future-Doctor it is with a previous Doctor. I think that would be much better.

personally i see the whole thing as stupid little teenage crushes, eg Rose was bored with her life and suddenly with the dr everything is new and exciting and nothing is the same, she infact fancies this.
while the dr's feelings were jus due to the fact after many years of wandering alone he finally had some-one, and only had stronger feelings due to Rose having strong feelings for him- you know you dont fancy someone untill maybe you know they fancy you, and then you start looking at them in a different light.....its happened to me before.
Can I just say that I hope it's not as...gross...as the Mirror article? I always liked the understatement in the show...I really do not want to hear about the Doctor "going the distance." Yuck.

there seems to be a lot of "rose is coming back so how can he do this", in regard to river song. but i get the impression ppl are thinking the dr is practically two timing rose (although his relationship with her appears to have been platonic). there could be decades or even century's between rose and river, its just time travel that makes things overlap!

It's not a matter of cheating, it's a matter of putting a huge romantic storyline in right before reopening ANOTHER romantic storyline. Especially with kids watching that could get easily confused by this. Hell, I'm fairly sure at the moment that *I'm* confused by this, and I'm 31!
If this had happened, say, near the beginning of the series, or was a bit more minor, I'd have no problem with it, just like I had no problem with The Girl in the Fireplace. In fact I love that episode.
Here's hoping the Mirror blew it up far more than it actually is, if it *does* happen. Considering that paper is a glorified tabloid as far as I've heard, I'll take it with a grain of salt.
I don't want her to be his Time-Lady. That spot is just for Rose - just minus the fact that she's human. I don't care about this River girl, Rose and the Doctor are perfect together. I'm a Rose and Doctor shipper.

Yeah, you can't deny that the Doctor loved Rose. But neither of them knew they'd meet again. Similarly, as noted, the Doctor's romance with River Song in his future could take centuries to arrive. And as regards to a romantic story opening up in the finale episodes, I don't see there being any time for that.

That's actually the first time I've heard of this. And with so many rumors flying, I'm going to stick to a wait and see policy on that.
It would really be a kick in the teeth to a lot of fans if they did that.

With the recent success of Moffat's (amazing!) storylines it wouldn't surprise me if RTD decided to trust him with a more important storyline development...
Basically I trust them to make this work. Best episode of the series.
