David Tennant has revealed that he is missing his Doctor Who colleagues during his sabbatical from the hit show.
"I'm excited to be doing Hamlet," he told Doctor Who Magazine, "but I have got very at home in Cardiff. I love that crew. I love that set-up. I love the show, so I'm missing that. I miss Russell's writing. Shakespeare's all right, but he's lacking in spaceships"

And while we're on the subject of Hamlet and actors who are in it, some of the latest whisperings are that Patrick Stewart may be the 2nd big name to be cast for the 2009 specials (the first rumored to be Albert Finney)
This obviously depends on whether he has the time to to it, and whether he wants to accept the role. IF he does however, then according to the wonderful Eddie on the DWF:
- There will be no facial prosthetics or heavy make up
- There's a "killer" costume
- Patrick is keen to play someone who is "not the good guy for a change" (although the character is "not all bad")
- It's a significant enough character to be either moved, removed or revived later, depending on his availability
- He's keen to work again with David Tennant and "have the relationship evolve"
So there we go! Obviously these are just rumors and aren't confirmed yet. But people have already began speculating about Time Lords and Gallifrey...
UPDATE: Now there are whisperings of Stewart playing the Meddling Monk - another renegade Time Lord (read about him here)
And Lee (DWF) also put in these words:

The only rumour I've heard so far that seems in any way believeable is Albert Finney as Churchill.
I'd love to see Patrick Stewart as a baddie (he'd have to be a Time Lord though, wouldn't he?... in any case, I'm craving some Gallifrey stuff, bring it on already! ^^), and I bet him and Tennant would enjoy continuing to work together.

I'm sure I'll enjoy whatever Moffat does, though... it'll be a nice change of pace from Russell's stories, and I really like the episodes he's written.

ReplyDeleteIf I had the possibility to say just three words to Steven Moffat ahead of him taking over DW they would be "NO MORE DALEKS", because, seriously, they've been over used since the show returned.
I'm pretty sure Moffat's comments so far rule out a Dalek two-parter to open series 5. That seems quite unlikely.
ReplyDeleteA non-contemporary companion, though, would be good - and for that matter, I think there should be more companions again. Three seems good. Maybe you could then pair up the companions rather than forever pairing them with the Doctor.
I think the Daleks should be used less, but not forgotten. There should be fewer Dalek invasions of Earth because those always end with some cheap plot device because there's no other way to do it. Ironically, given their poor reception, Manhattan / Evolution was probably the better way to do Daleks in the future - less Daleks, smaller-scale plans.
I really can't see them bringing back the Meddling Monk, although it would be great to see the character back. What we do know though for certain is that David Morrissey is in fact a younger version of the first doctor (William Hartnell)for the Xmas 2008 episode!!!

I also think David will be staying half way through series 5.
Well lets hope if David Morrissey is playing the first doctor (younger), he doesn't kill the story by turning to the camera and wishing them a merry christmas like Hartnell. Also if this is true, Susan wouldn't be born yet. So maybe we'll get to find out who her mother is.......

ReplyDeleteI didn't mean that they shouldn't EVER bring the Daleks back. I said that they shouldn't have them in EVERY season. They should have at least a few Dalek-less seasons between the times that they DO bring them back.
ReplyDeleteIn the meantime, new monsters or other classic monsters will do just as well to scare viewers if they are properly written.
What annoys me isn't the fact that the Daleks are always back, it's that too many episodes are based on earth either in the modern day or in the past. I hate to gabble on, but really they should be making more episodes on wierd new planets, or instead of reviving old monsters like they have been doing, how about the doctor goes to their planet instead of them coming to earth???? Another thing I don't like is that the makers try to make it so that it reflects what would happen if these monsters really came to earth, as if it's trying to interact with its audience [ooohh, contraversial]. It doesn't need to because it already has a reputation with its audience, and so they should really be focussing on being more creative!

I think it happened in the old series where there was some other alien species that the Daleks were trying to be evil to, and the doctor went and helped the species, and it was great. None of this empathising with the human race rubbish. There's only so much of that that I can take. Maybe it's just me?

ReplyDeleteExactly my point! It's not like the BBC CGI dept. can't make up a false planet (then again, in the special at the end of the last series we saw that same shot of the planets igniting or whatever about 12 million times).

ReplyDeleteDidn't they outright admit for a previous series that they couldn't do that many alien planets because of budget limitations? If you look at the alien planets they have been to, we don't really see the outside world, it's all inside, with humans - e.g., The Impossible Planet, Midnight. And New Earth totally doesn't count. I think they do need at least one new "real" alien planet.

The Dalek stuff was cool for series 1 and the "there's more of us Daleks here and there" shtick managed to uphold its credibility in series 2. Then it all degenerated. The Cult of Skaro should've emergency-temporal-shifted to season 4 for a minor story to return with Davros in season 5. Now we'll probably need a couple of years to get over the Dalek glut. ReplyDeleteNow as for cap'n Picard... The first thing that came to my mind was some sort of Sabalom Glitz character. He often did that sort of stuff on undercover missions on Star Trek.
I dont understand what knur means about Cpt. Picard But this is going to be an awsome year for Doctor Who and Sarah Jane Adventures (yes I watch that to!) What make it strange is that some how Davros survives the blowing up of his "Planet" but lived which is strange then again its Doctor Who!

ReplyDeletePatrick has impressed me more since he started doing sci-fi beyond Star Trek than when he had only done that. Many of the characters he's played have been genuine in feel, whether good or bad. And perhaps in some ways, playing the role of Charles Xavier has served as a better preparation for playing a Gallifreyan Time Lord than others.
ReplyDeleteI don't really object, as perhaps some others have, to Patrick playing a Time Lord. I do, however, find it a bit ironic that he would be playing one, based on comments from Lala Ward who said in an interview that, while she was playing the role of Romana II, he poo-poo'd sci-fi in a conversation they had as they'd shared an elevator ride. (Little-known factoid there, I suppose.)
As a creative type myself, when I'd first heard of this rumor, my mind went to the possibility of Patrick playing a racial memory recall for Jenny, the Doctor's genetically-spawned daughter. Of course, with an established, "major name" actor, you don't normally use them in second- or third-stringer cameo roles, and you don't use them lightly.
Frankly, I'm glad to see the notion of harking back to actual-older actors to play Time Lords, instead of just casting everyone we see as post-pubescent twenty-somethings who do nothing but act like conflicted metrosexuals.
