Planet of the Dead

Woop!
Enjoyed it? I did :)

So now you can unleash all your pent-up, Who-less frustrations, and bask in the unquenchable joy of Doctor Who :)

Methinks this episode was a particularly good one indeed :) loved Malcom, loved the Doctor, love the random other characters, thought the flying bus was very Harry Potter but in a Who way... yeah, good episode!

Obviously the whole prophecy bit was delightfully intriguing:

First impressions of it was:
"your song will end soon" - obviously regeneration reference
"its returning through the dark" - Gallifrey??
"he will knock 4 times" - the Master

I guess two of those seem pretty obvious what with us knowing Tennant is leaving, and Simm being seen on set. But I'm still preying Gallifrey will make a comeback.

Hooray!

Jess, do you know of a free proxy server that works so that viewers outside the UK can see the episode once it's up?

Jess said...

I'm a little unsure of what a proxy server is to be honest

Sean said...

Basically it's a mask for IP addresses so that your computer looks like it's from another country (allowing people in America like me to see the episodes online after they air in the UK on the official site, for example).

Since you don't really know what they are and so wouldn't know of any good ones, do you think you could see if any of the videos for Planet of the Dead are working, because even with my proxy server I can't view them.

And if you want a better explanation, Combom's blog has a few good articles. Just type "proxy" in the search.

I have yet to find a proxy that can bypass the BBC Iplayer (have tried including recently). But there are sources for Who. Like Rootforum1.com

couldn't they have put this on after primeval.

oh well ill record doctor who primeval and confidential and watch the first 2 live and primeval after

"He will knock four times" hmmmm.....

Nice reference to this being the Doctor's 200th adventure - the bus was number 200.

I think he will knock 4 times means The Master because when The Master taps on table in series 3 it is 4 times and then he does it again and again and it is 4 beats each times.

Try tapping with 2 fingers on a table.

Overall i think the episode was brilliant.

I've been able to find proxies in the past that have worked, but not today...

Xmadole said...

Doesn't the Thing in Midnight knock four times? Just wondering..

USE HTTP PROXY 87.86.13.29 PORT 80. (you have to put it in for your browser manually, I'm afraid, but it works)

Did anyone else notice in tonight's (11/04/09) episode, 'Planet of the Dead', that the Double-Decker bus used to get them to the Planet through the worm-hole had the reg number of W974GHM - it was even read out phonetically by the police - and the bus which returned them had a reg number of RUA461W? How did they miss that?????

Why didnt the dr just use his key to get the tardis to him like in father's day?
Episode over in 5mins, allowing plenty of room for some decent writing.

I agree about the noise of the drums. Tap 4x

And as for the cloister bells foreboding regeneration, very Logopolis. Where we met the watcher, the future doctor. Didn't someone elsewhere suggest Ood Sigma was the watcher.

The Waters of Mars....maybe melted Ice.

Overall, a great episode - much stronger than Christmas's 'The Next Doctor' IMO. RTD promised a romp, and a romp was what we got. And how cool was that shot of the wrecked Tritovore (Tritovorian?) spaceship?! The flying bus was a great touch too - very Harry Potter, as Jess said, but very cool nonetheless. Bring on the next special!

Jess said...

Next special looks AMAZING! :)

"Why didnt the dr just use his key to get the tardis to him like in father's day?"

Great question. I suppose on one end it's forgetful writing. Davies and Roberts forgot that catch in Cornell's script. However to play devil's advocate, we could say it was because in FD the Tardis was adrift and in POTD it was parked? Man he really needs a Stattenheim remote.

PS: def the Master. And if those red nails at the end of LOTTL were Donna's, now wouldn't that really suck?

I LOVED THE SPECIAL. Way better than the Christmas one that's for sure. Simple but good.

Now have only seen Doctor Who since it came back I never saw any of the old ones(by which I mean the ones before the 9th Doctor)

So what do you mean by Gallifrey? Wasn't that his home? So what makes you think its Gallifrey?

Just curiosity.

I liked it too.
Is it me or lady christina was a bit doctor-ish sometimes?
It wasn't midnight-ish as i thought the first time i saw the trailer...
I heart Lee Evans character :)

flying girl said...

Oh, loved it too! And I second the previous post, Malcom was amazing and brave!!! And since he's a UNIT scientist, hopefully we'll see him again! ('You named a unit after yourself? Didn't do Watt any harm!' Brilliant!)

Wasn't there another prophecy/strange line/loose end kind of thing about a girl? Remember the same psychic woman said something about a girl and her husband went 'What girl, dear?' And they kind of left it hanging. I should go back and rewatch it and catch what she says.

Loved a reference to Donna! And 'I'll just go to that police box and arrest myself!" :)

flying girl said...

Ok, found it! She says: 'But the girl, the girl will fly.' (Hm, I like flying girl references :)

So, could be a reference to Christina flying the bus at the end, but then wouldn't she just say 'Christina will fly?' So, maybe it's another prophecy? Something about Donna, perhaps?

Seeeing as we already have the following confirmed it might be best a bit of thought:

Master (Confirmed by RTD)
Regeneration (Defininetly)
Daleks (They always come back)

Also how come in an interview with RTD before the episode he said that the Tritivore were going to be the best villain ever.

pearls and polaroids said...

any chance we'll see the ood come back at any point?
"your song will end soon"
now i'm not the biggest dr who fanatic but didn't one of the ood say something along those lines?

Brett said...

Yeh erm the song bit, i think, is a reference to his and donnas relationship, because the ood said they had a song, and now its ending... doctor regenerates... donna... dies?

Jess said...

All this mentioning of Oods... well if you check out the Waters of Mars page you might get some answers :P

M.A - Yup, Gallifrey was the Time Lords home that was destroyed in the Time War. Thats all there is to it really, but I just reckon since RTD made up the Time War and the destruction of Gallifrey he must have some sort of idea for bringing it back... thats all

Plus I'd love to see the Doctor's reaction to suddenly having a home again :)

Curtis Machen said...

When it says "Your song will end soon" although, yes this does make me think of a regeneration.. but just think.. Song.. Riversong? :D
I'd love to see it go into the story of riversong with david tennant. He works better in their unknown relationship.

But about gallifrey coming back.. As much as id love to see that.. How is it possible.. And ok while typing I suddenly thought; It was said the timelords was wiped out.. it didnt say the planet was gone did it?

Jess said...

As far as I know Gallifrey is definitely gone - there are a few references to it being burned away to just rocks and dust etc etc

The Doctor talks about how its all Time Locked, a fixed point in history, so he can't just go back and change its destruction.

But then Dalek Caan managed to get through the Time Lock and rescue Davros.

True he went completely insane but I'm sure the Doctor is much more clever than a Dalek... so's the Master for that matter... or any possibly surviving Time Lord.

Flying girl-
"Loved a reference to Donna! And 'I'll just go to that police box and arrest myself!"

Did Donna say that or something?

Anonymous said...

just liked to add

"your song will end soon" - obviously regeneration reference

and the ood(ood sigma was on set at the end of "the water on mars"

flying girl said...

To Name:

No, Donna didn't say that, I just didn't write it well. I meant I liked those two things, even though they're unrelated :) Well, I liked lots of things in this episode!

Fantastic! I loved the ending with Lady Christina...a perfect way to resolve the relationship with that character, and so true to the Doctor's character as RTD has developed it. I hate when shows develop amnesia about things that happened previously...and having the Doctor continue to make this decision to travel alone is a much better way to keep the story integrated than having endless references to the previous companions (though, I'm not going to lie, I love that too). But it would have been too depressing if she'd just gone to jail, and somehow not true to the Doctor either. I live for these wonderfully tuned personal interactions on DW. :)

Jess, I am totally with you in praying for Gallifrey's return. Honestly, I think we have a good chance. It would be one of the only ways that RTD could top everything he's done so far...I mean, the Doctor has already saved not only the universe but now the multiverse. I think it would be one of the few ways left to RTD as well to make sense of this endless cycle of loss the 10th doctor experiences. Anyway...I live in hope!

For those who know: have there ever been any other aliens on Mars besides Ice Warriors?

"the ood said they had a song, and now its ending... doctor regenerates... donna... dies?"

My theory: Someone--the Master, perhaps--causes Donna to remember her time with the Doctor. As she's burning, the Doctor rides to her rescue, takes the raging tempest into himself, saving Donna (a nice Christmas present for her) and causing himself to regenerate. It's not unlike what happened with Rose and the 9th Doctor but it makes sense...

I wouldn't like that POTW style reg. I'd like an original one.
My wish is for the master to bring back Gallifrey right before the Doctor's eyes. That would be EPIC!

FanaticalWhovian said...

I enjoyed it but had a few disappointments. Mostly didn't care for the filming style. Felt a little emotionally detached at times. Also sad that the Doctor didn't do a whole lot of stunts. but considering DT was getting over back surgery when filming POTD that isn't surprising. Also expected our bug friends to have a bigger part and possibly be bad. I died when the Doctor spoke in their language! Could have kicked UNIT a few times..they didn't seem to have their brains attached all that well..also decided I would never let the Doctor behind the wheel of my car! Ever!

Tiffany said...

I really enjoyed it! I loved the doctor with his easter egg and then the sunglasses and him saying he'll just step in that police box and arrest himself! Lol :D

The storyline was fine, could of been better but it was ok.

Lady Christina was a good companion as well, very doctor-ish. And i love MALCOLM! He is so funny and it's good to see someone appreciates our favourite timelord!

The prophecy however...that just freaked me out!

Your song will end soon: Well, that isn't exactly shocking...the ood said that.

Its returning through the dark: Maybe the meta crisi doctor? Or midnight monster? Or the master? Or like Jess said, Gallifrey?

He will knock four times: It is obviously the master now but at first i thought maybe the midnight monster because the doctor knocked four times on the crusader vehicle.

It was fab overall :D

Scorpio said...

Gallifrey burnt and is gone from what the doctor remembers however i have a feeling that in the final episode where the doctor dies on his thirteenth regeneration that it will be brought back for a new war with the Daleks and Skaro.

Also heres a quick Doctor who Timetable:

10th Doctor: Dies at the end of 2009
11th Doctor: Signed on for three years ends 2012
12th Doctor: Presumably another lot of years 5 maximum ends in 2017
13th Doctor: Long living this one probably 8 years dies 2025

So hopefully we will outlive the doctor!

Rebecca said...

Okay guys I'd like to make a prediction.... I think Malcom is the Master. I really do. We'll just wait now.

what about the advert on the side of the bus - neon mobile phone network. in s3 the master created a network. Perhaps NEON is by the master as well??????

I'm just gonna throw this out there: how awesome would Donna be as a villain? Think about it- Donna somehow gets her memory and her DoctorDonna capabilities back, is massively and royally ticked off at the Doctor for wiping her mind, and decides that somebody - namely her - needs to teach the Doctor a lesson. She uses her genius to bring back the Master, and the two of them go to town. It's a plausible answer for how the Master comes back, and for the mystery woman who picked up the Master's ring. Moreover, like I said, Donna = FABulous villain; just think of her snarkiness and Simm's insanity on the screen together! Ooh, and it explains River Song's look of stunned, horrified sadness much more neatly.

the flying bus HARRY POTTER HAVE YOU SEEN HARRY POTTER BEFORE OBVIOSLY NOT THEN

THE CYBERKING I THOUGHT WAS STAR WARS

Anonymous said...

my story for the end of the time war is that the doctao created the genisis arks which had a device that attracted dalekanium. then the timelords used these to imprison the daleks and sent them to "Pete's world" (where the Cult of Skaro found one which explains the two holes leading to petes world seen in rise of the cybermen and doomsday which were from the void ship getting to and from "Pete's world")they then sent a false video to the dalek emperor showing the destruction of Gallifrey. the timelords then sent the doctor with an altered memory into the universe to tell the timelords enemies that Gallifrey was destroyed, then put their planet out of sync with the rest of the universe.
