I belive it may just be death, seeing as what Tennant said about YOU CAn SENSE DEATH KNOCKING - BUT HOW MANY TIMES.
But Maybe Its A UPhamism for the Master To return To End The 10th Doctor's reign.
But, here Is My OVERALL Assumption: I belive the Midnight creature was The Master's Soul or something odd along those lines and that would make the master's tapping of drums (4 beats) knocking....
I think it may be the Master (four knocks- duh duhduh duh...) but John Barrowman apparantly leaked he'll be in DT's last ep(s), so possibly Jack too.
Hmm... Who spent his episodes repeatably tapping out four specific beats of a drum? This isn't rocket science, or a remotely difficult to decypher attempt at foreshadowing.
On a related note, am I the only person annoyed with the fatalistic and largely nonesensical prophecies and words traveling through time? Its just a cheap way of creating mystery and its never really worked on NuWho.

No, you are not alone. It is getting old isn't it. The devil said that Rose would die in battle; the Face of Boe said "you are not alone"; the Ood said "your song will end soon"; the crazy dalek said that "one will die"; and now, "he will knock 4 times".
The series definitely needs a new writer, and it's good that we're getting one. And, I also think that David Tennant has been looking a bit tired in the Doctor role ... we're overdue for a regeneration
i doubt wilf will return through the dark so that's him ruled off. the face of boe doesn't have hands so i don't think it could be him, i think it could be the master but DT said that it's not what you think on commentary so i'm not sure.

The Face of Boe - no cos he's dead and the "legend" said he would only meet the Doctor 3 times, which he already has done.
Ood Sigma - don't think so, although he is in the Waters of Mars.

Captain Jack - nothing against Capt Jack at all, seriously cos I do like the character of Jack, but not another returning companion?
Bad Wolf - that already returned in Turn left, so I hope not.
Wilf - HOORAY! But I don't think what Carmen said refers to him.

The Master - YES! We got there in the end. lol
I would LOVE it if Wilf had to choose between saving the doctor or betraying him to the Master to save Donna. What a great twist if the knocking was done by Wilf to give away the doctor's location. Sweet old Gramps the ultimate Judas.
Knocking is *not* tapping. The four knocks is a clue that we won't understand until we see it and then we'll likely just let out a groan or two, because the buildup doesn't match the conclusion.
Per David Tennant we weren't meant to understand the warnings. All those foks who keep saying it's the Master are going to wake up on New Years with egg on their faces.

When the strange woman (Carmen) told the doctor it is coming through the dark...i was like WTF?? Then she hesitated and said...he will knock four times.
That's when something hit me...the midnight alien...i don't know why now, at first i was determined and dead sure about my idea because in midnight, the doctor knocked four times then the midnight alien did too.
In planet of the dead, after he is told the prophecy, they play sinister music in the background, similar to midnight.
However...i do beleive it is the master now so please don't kill me for being so stupid and missing the obvious.
But you have to admit...i'm only thinking outside the big blue police box.

Why does the list not include the beast (series 2)? One of the ood are back, they are filming in caves, so many similarities. And the prophecy said IT is returning through the dark- could be the beast! He will knock 4 times- the devil? Or the Master posessed by the devil? It's certainly more reasonable than dalek Caan or the Hath?!! But i hope it's not true- I mean the doctor defeated by the devil- sort of very human or sth?!

The theories about the Midnight alien returning are cool, especially since Planet of the Dead had a few pseudo-references to that episode (trapped on a bus, the line 'humans on buses.. always blaming me, etc).
However, that episode was very much a one off, and i doubt a big final end for our Doctor would use something from an episode many people have likely forgotten.

it might also be one of the previouse doctors or the midnightmoster its a bit to oviouse to be the master it could be the vasta nerada along with river song or it could be gallyfry or mondas or telos or skaro coming bACK TO HAUNT THE DOCTOR

Well I think to be truly epic then the "It is returning through the dark" could be a reference to Gallifrey. In which case I would also suggest that perhaps the person who will knock four times might just be Rasilon himself!
iam not sure but cud it possibly b the doctors daughter jenny becuz she flew off in a rocket afta the doctor left her but she cud still possibly b alive
I think that is the Doctors hidden past that will be returning through the dark. I think that he will have to endure things that he has tried to forget and that still haunt him to this day. This is returning through the dark where he had banished these memories. This would tie in with the nightmare sequences involving the master etc.
The knocking will be much more than the master, although I am led to believe that he will be in the final DT episodes.
I don't really know what the knocking will refer to, maybe just a philosophical thing regarding the next doctor, i.e. his regeneration which is overdue since his fake regeneration during journey's end. The doctor has therefore been living on borrowed time.
