The Fob Watch

The Fob Watch is directly connected to one of the TARDIS' devises known as the Chamelion Arch, which re-writes a Time Lords DNA.
Although first introduced in the new series, in the episode entitled 'Human Nature', it is assumed that they are a customary part of the TARDIS, as The Doctor states how he has always wondered about using it.


The Fob watch is decorated with Gallifreyan symbols and used by being attached to the Chamelion Arch where the essence of the Time Lords is then removed and stored within the Watch. When The Doctor uses it, it takes away his memories, intelligence and phisiological nature of two hearts, (as well as slightly changing his personality and percepions)

Though surrounded by a perception filter which prevents The Doctor from realising what it is, the Time Lord essence inside appears to be able to communicate to certain indeviduals. The communication usualy involves several, or one whispered voice, and occasional flashes of the Time Lords life.

When the watch is opened by the 'Time Lord', the essence is released. When John Smith opens the watch in 'Family of Blood' he becomes The Doctor once again, with the persona of 'John Smith' then being referred to as 'dead'.
An identical watch also appears in 'Utopia', in which is stored Professor Yana's true identity as the Master. This sggests that it could have been used by several other Time Lords to also hide their identities.

Psychic Paper

A recent addition to The Doctors close-kept gadgets. It is depicted as a simple blank piece of paper kept in a credit card or travel pass holder. It is said to be a then-recent invention of the Celestial Intervention Agency, before its destruction.

Function:

• It allows anyone holding it to show other people whatever they want them to see on the card. (Often an alternative identity in order to get into places)
• It can unlock doors that would normaly need a pass by the use of the holder psychically changing the paper to hold the correct code.
• It also has the ability to display telepathic messages from others (Such as from The Face of Boe in New Earth)

The Psychic Paper is also described as a 'tricky thing' as the results of what is shown and seen seem to vary with different people.

The Doctor seems to be able to use it to show what he want's quite easily, presumably because of his advanced mind. However, when other people are using it, they can't let their mind wander as they may give away private details about themselves.

This can also be used as a useful way of gathering information about someone. If they are unkowingly given the Psychic Paper to hold, then The Doctor will be able to read details about them that were subconciously picked up by the paper.

Even The Doctor however, does not have complete control over what the Psychic Paper picks up from other peoples minds...

• In 'Tooth and Claw', he seems surprised when Queen Victoria tells him he has been appointed as her Protector.
• In 'The Idiot's Lantern', the Doctor flashes the paper at a guard, and then has to look at it in order to realise that the man thinks he's the King of Belgium.
• Sometimes, The Doctor is competely unsure of what another character saw, as the 'after-image' fades away.
• People with 'low-level psychic training' or of a high intelligence are not susceptible to psychic paper. This is demonstrated by members of Torchwood in Army of Ghosts and by Shakespeare in The Shakespeare Code.

The Sonic Screwdriver

One of The Doctor's more frequently used gadgets. It is roughly the same shape and size as a screwdriver, yet it is... sonic...


Jack: Who has a sonic screwdriver?
Doctor: I do!
Jack: Who looks at a screwdriver and thinks, 'Ooo, this could be a little more sonic?'
Doctor: What, you've never been bored? Never had a long night?... Never had a lot of cabinets to put up?

It made its first appearance in the serial 'Fury from the Deep', and has been used throughout the series' ever since, though it has been through several different models and designs. The name implies that it operates through the use of sound waves to apply a physical force onto objects, such as locks.


Functions

• Opening virtually any lock, electronic or mechanical. However, it has absolutely no effect on a 'deadlock seal'
• As an aid to repairing objects and machines
• Detecting things (booby-traps, antimatter)
  
• Sending & receiving signals
• Fusing metal, such as barbed wire
  
• Intercepting teleportation
• Lighting candles
  
• Driving screws
• Igniting marsh gas
• Activating processes or functions inside the TARDIS from outside
• Burning, cutting, or igniting different substances

• It was once used it to detonate land mines from a distance.
• And once used as a 'miniature sonic lance' to cut out a lock
• But it doesn't do wood.
  

In Smith and Jones, the Doctors original screwdriver (which he had from the beginning of the new series) was destroyed when attached to a x-ray machine. However, he quickly got an updated version, which looked the same.

In the more recent episodes Silence in the Library/Forsest of the Dead, it is revealed that the Doctor gives his screwdriver to a future companion, River Song. The version we see is an updated one which performs much better and includes a "red setting" and a "dampener".


It also had a component within it that stored a 51st century communication devise. This devise is able to store a "data ghost" of the recently deceased.

The new-look Sonic Screwdriver is larger.

Time And Relative Dimension In Space

Type: An unreliable Type 40 TT capsule.
Functioning: Unreliable - The Doctor is constantly attempting to fix the TARDIS, it often appears in the wrong time and place, and it always takes the form of a blue police box.
Age: Uncertain. It used to belong to another Time Lord called Marnal before the Doctor. The TARDIS has been shown as having to wait around for the Doctor sometimes for decades, and even centuries, while he is off on his adventures. The Doctor himself has claimed that he has had 900 years of travel in time and space.
Acquired: Stolen from the shipyards of Gallifrey, by The Doctor, where it had been stripped for spare parts.

Characteristics

• 'It's bigger on the inside!'
• The TARDIS has in fact been noted as having several bedrooms, a wardrobe, a bathroom, a large attic, a kitchen, the console room, a second control room, the zero room, a library, and a swimming pool, as well as endless amounts of corridors.
• It is alive.
• TARDIS' are grown, not made.
• The TARDIS shows a psychic ability. It can translate languages into a chosen persons head, has a telepathic ability, and has been noted as acting funny when it is in danger.
• Their power is known as the 'Heart of the TARDIS' and it is drawn from a combination of the Eye of Harmony (now destroyed an Gallifrey), the universe itself, and can be charged by the Doctor's own life force if necessary.
• Before a TARDIS is fully functional, a Time Lord must operate it for the first time so it can be primed with their biological imprint.
• It travels by 'disappearing here and reappearing there'. It doesn't tend to cope well with actual flight (shown in The Runaway Bride)
• A key is required to open the TARDIS doors. Both the key and the lock have been changed several times.
• Once the doors are shut, nothing can get in.
• Messages and visual images of The Doctor can be shown on a screen or projected from different points inside.
• The TARDIS has shown itself to be practically indestructible. It can withstand gunshots, lazes, explosions, black holes, falling from great heights, and temperatures up to 3000 degrees.

Parts of the TARDIS

• The heart of the TARDIS/Time Vortex - the power source behind it.
• The Zero Room - A chamber that was shielded from the rest of the universe and provided a restful environment.
• Chameleon Circuit - used so the TARDIS blends into what ever surroundings it appears in. The Doctor's chameleon circuit is broken, hence the TARDIS' form of the police box no matter where it ends up.
• Chameleon Arch - used to rewrite a Time Lords biology to change him into something else (most noticeably a human)
• Briode nebuliser - where the Time Lords imprint is stored so that he, and others, can safely travel through time and space.
• A Cloister Bell - Used to warn of on-coming danger.
• A perception Filter - so people will not notice it.
• Gravitic Anomaliser.
• Helmic Regulator.

• The Doctor always refers to his TARDIS as a she.
• Because of the TARDIS' poor performance, The Doctor is often seen as hitting the console with a nearby hammer whilst telling it to 'behave!'
• In the episode Sound of the Drums, the TARDIS was transformed by The Master into a Paradox Machine in order to bring about the end of Earth.
• According to Time Lord law, unauthorised use of a TARDIS carries 'only one penalty', implied to be death.

Time Lords vs Daleks... where Time itself is used as a weapon... The entirety of time and space on the verge of being destroyed, and only one man to stop it.

What happened?
'My planet's gone. It's dead. It burned... It's just rocks and dust. Before its time... There was a war. A Time War. The Last Great Time War. My people fought a race called the Daleks, for the sake of all creation. And they lost. We lost. Everyone lost. They're all gone now. My family. My friends. Even that sky...'

The Master: The Time Lords only resurrected me because they knew I'd be the perfect warrior for a Time War. I was there when the Dalek Emperor took control of the Cruciform. I saw it. I ran. I ran so far... because I was so scared.

The Aftermath
The war had consequences up and down history. Although the name of the Time Lords lived on in legend and myth, the universe was a changed place....

'...when the Time Lords kept their eye on everything, you could pop between realities and be back in time for tea. Then they died, and took it all with them. The walls of reality closed, the world was sealed, and everything became that bit less kind...'

Although The Doctor contemplates using the TARDIS to travel back to before the war and save his race, he knows that this will create a paradox by crossing his own timestream. He also is tempted by the by the power of the Skasis Paradigm which would give him the ability to reorder the universe... 'I could stop the war'... but, as he frequently comments: there was nothing he can do, and he can't change it now...

• The Nestene Consciousness - it's planet was destoyed in the war.
• The Gelth - their bodies had been destroyed by the war.

"The oldest and most mighty race in the universe. Looking down on the galaxies below... sworn never to interfere, only to watch."

Time Lord society, and indeed possibly Time Lords themselves, were formed through the combined efforts of the Time Lord Founders.

There is a difference between the inhabitants of Gallifrey (the Gallifreyans) and the Time Lords. In order to become a Time Lord, you must be chosen at the age of eight to be enrolled into 'Time Lord Academy'. It is here that a novice will look into the Untempered Schism and see the whole of time and space, as well as taking regular subjects and examinations until graduation.

History

The Dark Times

The Time of Empire
The Gallifreyans were an ancient species, having evolved well before the Dark Times. And being one of the first humanoid species to evolve. One Time Lord stated that they had perfected the transmat beam when the Universe was less than half its present size. Even before the Sol system (Earths own solar system) formed, the Gallifreyans were able to lead an interstellar war against the Racnoss Empire.

This early empire was massive, with colonies across the galaxy. Slave trading was a common practice, even though there was protesting against it. And Gallifrey was governed by mystery and superstition, through the Cult of Pythia.

Pythia ruled as part of a matriarchy, who had powerful psychic powers that enabled them to see the future.

The Time of Chaos
The Time of Chaos was when the power of the Pythia started to weaken and the Neo-Technologists, led by Rassilon, started to take power. The last of the Pythia began to lose her power of prediction and, in an attempt to see further she recruited Vael (a skilled Gallifreyan with psy-powers) to work with her and then spy on Rassilon. But when her idea of her future failed to come, she sent her followers to Karn, and then cursed Gallifrey with sterility and threw herself into an abyss below her temple.

After the collapse of the power of the Pythia, there were threats of war and chaos throughout the empire. Another Ice Age began and the slave colonies of Gallifrey started to demand their freedom.

The Age of Rassilon

In order to deal with the problems facing the empire, Rassilon instituted several changes. He instituted the creation of genetic looms to enable the Gallifreyan race to reproduce.

Following these early changes, the Time Lords began research into black holes, the first race to do so. Later, Omega utilised two manipulators, the so-called hands of Omega, in order to create a black hole from which the Time Lords drew the power for time travel.

During these early times, the Time Lords would abuse their power and use items, such as the Time Scoop, to abduct other beings from throughout history. Once these beings has been taken, they were made to fight each other for the Time Lords amusement in The Death Zone.

Following the Time Lord/Vampire War, the Time Lords had abandoned the use of violence, but continued to involve themselves in the affairs of the wider universe. However, this had catastrophic results for other life forms.

The people of the planet Minyos were gifted with high technology by the Time Lords, but as a result of this, nuclear war broke out and the Minyans were nearly made extinct. In a similar even, due to meddling on Kilst, Evolution was reversed for the inhabitants, while on Plastrodus 14 the inhabitants were all driven mad.

Non-interference policy
Horrified by the results of their meddling, the Time Lords adopted a strict policy whereby they would only observe the events of the wider universe, and never become involved personally.

However, the Time Lords themselves also broke the policy. The top secret Celestial Intervention Agency (CIA) was formed in order to break the policy for the interests and well being of Gallifrey.

Other than the CIA, there were the occasional times when the Time Lords chose to become involved with evens outside of Gallifrey. The Millennium War saw Rassilon fighting against the Mad Mind of Bophemeral, Braxiatel organised the Armageddon Convention, which led to the banning of many weapons of mass destruction.


Era of decadence
Centuries of isolation for Gallifrey meant that they had developed to their full potential, and their technology and power had reached a stagnate, even as other races became more powerful and dangerous.

Only the renegade Time Lords, formally the Deca, such as the Doctor and the Master were able to experience the further development of technology that Gallifrey were isolated against.

The Time Lords were easily rendered helpless while Omega began to drain energy from Gallifrey, and were only saved by the intervention of the Doctor. The ease with which the Master was able to alter records contained within the Archives and manipulate the Matrix was due largely to the fact that Gallifrey's technology had been surpassed on other worlds.

These revelations caused a revolution to occur on Gallifrey.

Destruction of Gallifrey
Gallifrey was actually destroyed twice, both times by the Doctor. The first time this happened was when the Time Lords went to war with a group known only as The Enemy. The war was temporal by nature and cracks throughout the time appeared which affected the past. The war with the Enemy raged for an undefinable amount of time, but at a point the temporal events stretched to a point where upon they effected a critical point, allowing the Doctor to openly attack, destroying Gallifrey.

At some timeless point after this, Gallifrey was restored. However, the Time Lords finally met their end in the Last Great Time War, against the Daleks. (See The Time War)

The Time Lords home planet, also known as the 'Shining World of the Seven Systems'
It has been located in the constellation of Kasterborous at galactic coordinates ten-zero-eleven-zero-zero by zero-two from galactic zero center, some 250 million light years away from Earth.








Gallifrey has been described as 'perfect to look at' though The Doctor appears to refrain from speaking about it, particularly in later episodes, after its destruction.

'The second sun would rise in the south, and the mountains would shine. The leaves on the trees were silver, when they caught the light, every morning it looked like a forest on fire. When the autumn came, a brilliant glow came though the branches...'


Within the Citadel of the Time Lords
The Citadel is located on the continent of Wild Endeavour in the mountains of Solace and Solitude. It is within here that the society of Gallifreyans and Time Lords live.

Gallifreyans is the term used to describe those born and living upon Gallifrey. They only become Time Lords after they have looked into the Untempered Schism and been educated in the Academy.

Other places mentioned within the Citadel are:

• The Academy - Where Gallifreyans learn, and can become Time Lords.
• The Matrix - A massive computer system that holds the combined knowledge of the Time Lords.
• The Panopticon - The main room of the Capital, the Eye of Harmony is kept underneath and provides the energy for time travel.
• The Cruciform - Although unconfirmed as to what it is, The Master reported seeing it destroyed during the Time War
• The Untempered Schism - A gap in the fabric of reality through which could be seen the whole of the vortex. Time Lord novices are initiated by looking into it.

Outside the Citadel
Outside lie the wastelands. This has been explored as where Time Lords, who have dropped out of Time Lord society, live in simpler tribal communities. The wasteland of Gallifrey includes:

• The Death Zone - used as a sort of arena by the first Time Lords during the Dark Times. Here they would use a Time Scoop to capture various species from throughout time, and pit them against each other in battle for their own amusement.
• The Tomb of Rassilon - Where the founder of Time Lord society is buried. It is stationed within the Death Zone and heavily guarded with traps.

Outside of Gallifrey
Shada
Shada was a planetoid where the Time Lords created a prison for the would-be conquerors of the universe.

Several Time Lords have managed to successfully escape from Shada, such as Salyavin, the Master and Grandfather Paradox. As well as holding Time Lords, it is clear that Shada contains many Daleks who have been captured over time

The Braxiatel Collection
It was renowned for being one of the greatest art galleries in, and was founded by Irving Braxiatel. Although run by a Time Lord, it was not on Gallifrey, but rather located on an asteroid which was rumored to have been won by Braxiatel in a game of cards.

It had extensive archaeological libraries which could be used by Braxiatel's permission, and the collection of books contained every book banned.
The reason for the creation of the Braxiatel Collection was revealed as a direct cause of the events on Minyos. Due to the destruction of the planet by the Time Lords hands, Braxiatel was prompted to begin collecting and preserving historical artefacts in case widespread destruction ever happened.

The End of Time and return of Gallifrey
In the last two episodes of the Tenth Doctor's reign, the Time Lords returned and brought back Gallifrey with them. Their plan was to create a link to Modern Day Earth through the use of the Sound of Drums in the Master's head, and by doing so, arrived. However, the Doctor stopped them before the Time Lords could unleash their final plan... the end of time itself to make the Time Lords eternal beings. The Doctor shot the diamond the Time Lords had sent to Earth as a rope for them to arrive which caused them to leave. However, just before they left, the Master saved the Doctor from being killed by Rassilon's glove by attacking Rassilon with his electric powers - formed as a by-product of his failed resurrection. The Time Lords returned to Gallifrey and continued fighting in the Time War...
