Well, I'm sure most people know already but heres an official post.
David Tennant is to stand down as Doctor Who, after becoming one of the most popular Time Lords in the history of the BBC science fiction show.
Tennant stepped into the Tardis in 2005, and will leave the role after four special episodes are broadcast next year.
He made the announcement after winning the outstanding drama performance prize at the National Television Awards.
"When Doctor Who returns in 2010 it won't be with me," he said. "I don't ever want it to feel like a job, so I want to move on when it still feels exciting and fresh. Now don't make me cry... I love this part, and I love this show so much that if I don't take a deep breath and move on now I never will, and you'll be wheeling me out of the Tardis in my bath chair."
'I'll miss it'
Three years was "about the right time" to play the role, he told the BBC in an exclusive interview. "I think it's better to go when there's a chance that people might miss you, rather than to hang around and outstay your welcome," he said.
His stint in the show had been "the most extraordinary time, it's been bewildering, life changing, very exciting", he said.
"And just so much fun, such a great show to work on. That's one of the reasons I think it's right to take a deep breath and bow out when it's still fun, when it's a novelty. I don't ever want it to feel like a job, so I want to move on when it still feels exciting and fresh and that means I'll miss it."
Russell T Davies, executive producer, said: "I've been lucky and honoured to work with David over the past few years - and it's not over yet, the Tenth Doctor still has five spectacular hours left!
"After which, I might drop an anvil on his head. Or maybe a piano. A radioactive piano. But we're planning the most enormous and spectacular ending, so keep watching."

This has been a sad day i found out about 6 hours ago so very sad. all i know is that who ever fils his shoes has a very big pair to fill David has been great and at many time Breathtaking and unforgettable. the show will countiue on just like it has before i can say i did not even know who david tennant was when he took over the tardis from Christopher and 4 years later he is one of my fav's i look forward to seeing the next 4 specials and seeing what they can do maybe a return of capt jack to say good bye or even Donna Nobel we will have to wait and see and in closing our Doctor will be leaving but we will always have Rose and 10.5 to return in the future also
Dan
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Out of anyone who could have left, why him. He NEEDS to stay AT LEAST another Series. I love him so much, and I'm a male!
This is a real shame. He added a lot to the regeneration of the show, but I suppose the real question is now who is going to replace him...
Hopefully it will be someone fun and lighthearted. DT started off as a very fresh Doctor, but seemed to descend into a darker and more gritty storyline. I'm not saying he was dark or too grim, but It will be nice to have a more frivilous doctor along the lines of Tom Baker!
Thanks David Tennant!
"You were my Doctor"
Its going to be weird not seeing DT as The Doctor. Who ever takes over they will have the biggest shows to fill. At least we have 5 more hours with the 10th Doctor, lets make sure they are good ones.
To the 10th Doctor.
I'm saddened by the news but I think he's made the right descision. Better to burn out than to fade away! DT is a great actor and he deserves success in other roles beyond British television.
I'm gobsmacked! I knew he would have left soon, before he outstayed his welcome, but it still shocked me when he made the announcement. Ah well, he leaves with many happy memories, for both himself and the fans.
LOVE YOU DAVID!
He's made a mistake not to stay for one more season. Then the transition can be smooth.
It’s gonna be tough, granted, I think to see David Tennent leave, but …
I cant’t help but think of something Chris Boucher said to a group of fans –me included– at a convention a few years ago, that part of what kept the show going for so long was the simple ability to change lead actors, every few years.
I can’t help but think that, although I’ll be sorry to see him go, I’d like to see who’s next.
My money’s on David Morrissey.
Any Takers?
No 1 will replace david tennant i just hope john simm takes ova in the specials they should do a swap like doctor the master and the master is the doctor and then the master dies
There is something really odd about this.
Those involved with Doctor Who always try really hard to keep spoilers under wraps... and then Tennant announces he's leaving, it doesn't make sense!
Then again if it was supposed to be just a misdirection, he wouldn't be so blunt about it.
I'm not sure what to believe, i'm not in denial, i mean i don't really care if he is stepping down, but something doesn't see right about it, and being the conspiracy theorist i am i never believe the media no matter how reliable the source is. I think i'm gonna ignore it until his replacement is announced.
Of course if it is true I can't see how it's not gonna screw up the story with River Song. She recognised the tenth doctor and Moffat himself said she would have an adventure with the tenth, and Moffat's not writing any of the 2009 specials :S.
sad to see him go but good luck to him in his future endeavours.
>>Of course if it is true I can't see how it's not gonna screw up the story with River Song. She recognised the tenth doctor and Moffat himself said she would have an adventure with the tenth, and Moffat's not writing any of the 2009 specials :S.<<
Ah, but he didn't say that that one time that he meets River that *he* would be the one writing it. Now that he's written the character into Doctor Who canon, he doesn't have sole ownership of her now. Any of the DW writers can write about her if they like.
As for David, I'm going to be gutted for a while, until the new Doctor comes around, then I'll be interested in who it will be and how they will pull off walking in David's large shoes. Thankfully the character lends to reinvention, so the next actor won't have to worry about doing things *like* David...only, hopefully, as good as David.
Even though I'm in my 30's, I feel like David was *my* Doctor. I'll miss him terribly as the Doctor, but he's young, he's still got many decades left in his career, and I wish him luck.
Oh, another thought...would it be out of line to have Eleven appear...as Eight? Paul McGann so deserved to be the Doctor on TV for a while.
Though, I have a feeling that The Next Doctor title is prophetic and it's likely to be David Morrissey, which I certainly won't mind either. He's a great actor.
According to the Doctor Who website:
"I'm still the Doctor all next year but when the time finally comes I'll be honoured to hand on the best job in the world to the next lucky git - whoever that may be."
This suggests that perhaps the Next Doctor isn't actually the next Doctor. Hmmm...
Anonymous at 14:11 has a good idea. I'd love to see David Tennant play the Master and John Simm play the Doctor. The Master has tried to take the Doctor's body before.
If the Christmas special doesn't lead directly on from Journey's End, the entire River Song storyline, and indeed a potentially infinite number of untold adventures, can happen then. Same with any other gap between episodes or specials. It's really no problem.
And we're already pretty positive that the other Doctor in The Next Doctor isn't going to be the next Doctor. Even if he is, it's not a problem - it's time-travel, it could be an early cameo from Eleven, or indeed Twelve or Thirteen or N.
Personally, I think that with the extended time of the specials and the extended budget, it'll be a great way for Tennant to go - out with a bang! And this was the best time for him to announce it, too - he's on top of the world, and he can tell the fans personally what's going on, rather than leaving it to an impersonal press release. He also beats the spoilers by announcing he's leaving long before episode's even in production - because there's no way they could keep it a secret until then, you all know this. scootle, you're really making a mountain out of a molehill.
How ironic....today I received in the mail the Sonic Screwdriver and Sonic Pen set I won on Ebay, and I hear this news the same day! I'm in my early 40's and Peter Davison and Colin Baker were "my" Doctors, but I immensely enjoyed David's portrayal and he became my second favorite! I am saddened to hear the news, and wish David the best! I still have a gut feeling that David Morrissey will be the Eleventh Doctor.
I want DT's Doctor to go out big, like bringing back the time lords and Gallifrey.
I'll miss David. :(
I find this very exciting. I'm a doctor who fan of old, and when the Doctor changes there is an excitment in the air. Bring on the 11th Doctor
I'm sad to see David Tennant go. I will miss him. I can't wait to find out who will play the 11th Doctor.
Make the next poll who we want as the new doctor because i dont know who the fan's favourite is :S
every website has a different favourite haha
Anonymous the master can t be the doctor he regenerate 5 times john simm played only the master not the doctor other john simm will both the master and the doctor that impossible
so john simm played the master not the doctor,
beside david morrisey will not play the 11th doctor in the next doctor untill DT is leaving doctor who at end of the 2009 then david morrisey can be the 11th doctor at series 5 2010
Anonymous also david tennant play the master that impossble too because david tennant is play the doctor not the master otherwise tennant would play both the doctor and the master that silly idea so david tennant is playing the 10th doctor soon in late 2009 alfer four special david tennant is leaving the doctor who so enough making david tennant to play the master and john simm play the doctor
We need to be careful that we don't run out of regenerations for the Doctor - it's already established that they normally only have 12 and we're on to the 11th now! Granted, some Time Lords have had more, but they have been granted by the Time Lords themselves - and they're not around anymore (at the moment) or they nick someone's body (Tremas) - the Doctor doesn't seem like that kind of Time Lord to me!
They're moving far too fast to be on the 11th Doctor already, seeing as there can only be 13 of them.
However, as this is sci-fi, there are no laws and something could happen to grant the Doctor more regenerations or something like that.
But this is a sad day for Whofans everywhere. Hopefully he's just being paid a lot to say this, but I think he's telling the truth. I think it would be a good time to give Paul McGann some TV time. He could be regenerating and telling the story of his adventures as the 8th Doctor or something, as the only official televised confirmation that he was the 8th was in Human Nature.
Anyways, we must wait for days to come.
Also it halloween maybe it doctor who monster mash but i don t know kids would say tick or treat by knock the door we must keep talking about david tennant is leaving doctor who at late 2009.
don t forget the master s regeneration because we also be careful that we don t run out of regenerations for the master the master need to appear in specials 2009 otherwise the master will stay dead to not regenerating to the new masters for 7 regenerations for him.now we must go to sleep at bed before people will knock the door for tick or treat for hallowe en.beside this is near dead for time lords the doctor the master the rani and the meddling monk able to regenerate.not refusing to regenerate just like the master who don t want to regenerate to the 7th master.
I'm sry, but theoretically David Tennant is, I was tempted to write "was", the 10th and the 11th Doctor, because of this year's final. Although we can discuss about it, whether it was a "real" regenarion or not, I think some fans will agree with me.
I think RTD and Moffat could be doing something really crafty. The title of the christmas special 'The Next Doctor' naturally leads the majority of fans to think 'well RTD obviously doesn't mean that literally, he is clearly planning something crafty'. But I would not be at all surprised if the title is a literal one and Morrisey is the next Doctor! I don't think it would be bad drama either. You have the 10th meeting the 11th and the 11th implying in someway that the 10th is going to regenerate, and very soon.
On another note, I think David Tennant announced his departure for 2 reasons. 1. Christopher Ecclestone's departure was supposed to be a secret which the BBC muffed. 2. The BBC hoped it might be a distraction from a certain other story that is dominating the BBC at the moment.
i'd just got over the 4 2009 specials but nowthat tennant's leaving i realy wish that next year had a series but at a later date, i hope that the rumors of catherine tate returning in one of the specials are true and if it is true that she starts being the companion again, mainly because i feel sorry for steven moffat, who now needs to find 13 new scripts, a new companion and a new doctor
i hope john simm plays the next doctor, i don't mean like a swap between the master and the doctor, but if they brought back a fob watch they could find a way to do it.
ID LOVE RUSSEL BRAND TO BE THE NEXT DOCTOR THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!!!
I cry everytime I try and read a "doctor who fan" post.
But i dont really know who i want to be the next doc. I think with moffat being darker it would be worthwhile to have a bit of a comedian undertones, but that couldnt totally take away from his darker aproach and seems more a cheap personality trick RTD would use.
Very well anyone want to the 11th doctor afler david tennant being replaced as replacement to him alfer four special 2009.
I still say john simm played the master not the 11th doctor.
david tennant played the clone doctor as the 11th doctor in journey s end that silly idea he played the 10th doctor soon in late 2009 he will leave dr who show alfer four special 2009 any Questions
Yes. Flame On
Can we have that in COHERENT ENGLISH?
Flame off!
the same anonymous from above, the31/10/08 07:02 one.
We are speculating about the 12th doctor, because David Tennant plays two doctors: 10th and 11th.
RTD is quoted in this post, "...and it's not over yet, the Tenth Doctor still has five spectacular hours left!" So it would appear they're not counting the quasi-regeneration we saw in Journey's End as one of the 'thirteen'. When number 13's time is up, I'm sure he could encounter some strange energy source which enables him to keep on regenerating, should the BBC wish to continue the show, which might be a very big 'if'.
Meanwhile, I think the '11th Doctor' has a certain gravitas to it and my personal wish is to see one a little more broody and enigmatic than hyperactive David Tennant (not saying I disliked him; I could do with a change of pace, is all). I also think this wish is unlikely to come true. Whilst they'll want to make 11 distinct from 10, DT was hugely popular, and the shadow of Colin Baker still looms over any producer toying with the idea of a cranky Doctor.
David tennant play the 10th doctor and the 11th doctor that dosen t make sense
tell me this is just a long Halloween prank. THIS CANT BE HAPPENING!!!!!!!!!!!
Actully my friend Anonymous halloween is over.
maybe someone wearing a doctor who costume that will be scary.
so this is novmeber not october anymore the ten doctors will be there at novmeber 14th.
halloween prank no monsters no zombies no aliens no ghost no devil no satan no demons and no witches will come to scare and harm you because are you scare i am scare too
and Upcoming the next doctor the cybermen form mondas and parallel earth and cybershades coming to delete all humans that also scary
I born here england I am 13 years old anyway I still want the 10th doctor to regenerate into the new doctor as the 11th doctor by White man not black because I am black too my hand and feet are white the doctor s gender is male not a female.
Doctor Who fan: If you are 13 years old and live in England, you must have gone to school and must have learned how to use commas and full stops. Please start practising. If you cannot do this, for whatever reason, please at least try and separate each of your thoughts with a full stop.
Most of us that comment on this blog are really tolerant but personally I find your comments extremely difficult to understand.
On another note, I wouldn't mind a black actor playing the Doctor. Just not Patterson James. I just don't think I could accept him as the Doctor.
Don Warrington anyone? :-)!
He was my first thought, actually, but he’s a little too old, I think. But if Steven Moffat and RTD have any more surviving member’s of the High Council of Gallifrey lurking in the proverbial cupboard, he’d be ideal.
well I go to school at mondays to fridays.
Let get on about the doctor so I don t think black men to play the doctor
Ok. Why not?
because black men want to play the 11th doctor that will not very good idea
The same anonymouse from above... you know which one...
I know it doesn't make any sense that David Tennant plays 2 doctors, but he did/does... and a huge thanks to RTD, I love this year'S final, but this was a little bit, hummmm, I don't want to say stupid but needless, unncecssary,... you know what I want to say...
Althoug I think in a few years there will be an explenation (not a good one...) why that hasn't been a real regeneration, but that
can't change nothing about it.
All in all:
I'm sorry but that makes DT also the 11th doctor.
Is this only me or are there also some other fans who agree with me?
sry jus noticed, that should be "anonymos" instad of anonymous"e", ;) but I like the word, maybe I'll use it as my new nickname, a useful typo... I'm amazed.
I know what you think... who cares.
dr who fan
Your saying because black men want to play the doctor then it wont be a good idea? So if we ever want to see a black dr, then we have to wait around till no black man want to play him...
also in the other "thread" i think you totally missunderstand the meaning of a darker doctor.
It could be same me or Doctor who fan like me but I just guessing black people form Africa maybe play the 11th doctor but not really.
If black person want to be next doctor just like Barack Obama want to be president of the America soon Barack Obama is president of US of the america I think you anonymous will read my post about Black person want to be the doctor or Not??? it would be Hard for everyone to be the 11th doctor in future
