Episode 5

The Poison Sky

Episode Location: Earth, London
Aliens/Enemies:
The Sontarans
New Characters: Martha Jones, Colonel Mace, Wilf, Sylvia
Gadgets Used: Sontaran lazers, teleport disks, sonic screwdriver, mobile phone, mallet
Episode Objective: To stop the Sontaran invasion of Earth

NOTE: I have serious doubts about the plot layout that I've made... I think there will be more coming and going off large, menacing looking spaceships. But I suppose we shall see!

As ATMOS machines continue to spew forth gas from vehicles all over Earth - enough to choke humanity - while the orbiting Sontarans prepare to invade and wage war. Now, the Doctor is already suspicious of the Martha clone - but can he save her, the rest of the world and himself, too? The fight it on, but Sontarans like fighting...

So, due to copious amounts of poisonous gas, not to mention the large Sontaran spaceship that is descending down to Earth, the world is on red alert and rather panicked.

So, once dear Wilf has been saved and the family is all right, the Doctor and Donna head off back to UNIT from the looks of things and the Doctor gives Donna a present!

Donna: God, the airs disgusting.
Doctor: Its not so bad for me - go on, get inside the TARDIS-
(holds out key)
Oh. Never given you a key. Keep that, go on. Thats yours. Quite a big moment really.
Donna: Yeah, maybe we can get sentimental after the worlds finished chocking to death.

But it appears she does get sentimental. Perhaps after the Doctor leaves her to give himself up to the Sontarans, or some such sacrifice.

But no... she's not really that safe since, soon after that, the Sontarans decide to beam up the wee blue box and claim it as their own (with poor Donna trapped inside!)

So now we have Donna sneaking about in a spaceship full of mindless killers... which can't really be that much fun. And she has no way of getting back.

And, according to those lucky enough to have already seen it, "There's only one person who can save the day. After helping the Doctor over the last few episodes, Donna gets the chance to see if she can do things on her own... But is she up to it?"

Perhaps those driving lessons will be put to good use?

Anyway, Earth, danger, red alert, nuclear strike... panic!

Well, Luke's clearly not... in fact, he seems quite excited about it all: "Oh man, this is war!"
And it really is as the Sontarans attack, and UNIT fights back.

And unfortunately, the Martha clone is still about, still wreaking havoc, and still fooling the Doctor as he realizes: "They need this gas for something else..."

So what is she planning on doing with our dear Time Lord?

But its okay, since the Doctor (being very clever and all that) is quickly onto the Clone. Surely she'll have a strange mark in the back of her neck where the umbilical chord was? And surely if its a clone then it wont have Martha's wedding ring?

And then off he pops to go find the real Martha and do a good old rescue!

Bless

So, Luke Rattigan: we know is a little misunderstood, and also working with the Sontarans in a a plot to destroy the word... but why is he here with the Doctor, Donna and Martha?

Well, since its the real Martha, after being saved and whatnot... maybe Luke has changed his ways and decided to help?

Then again... maybe not:

"Its time people, this is what our work has been for!"

And the Doctor meets up with the dear Colonel again, although he doesn't really seem to get on with him. Maybe since he's just ordered a nuclear bomb to be fired.

The Doctor: Whatever you do, Colonel Mace, do not engage the Sontarans in battle. There's nothing they like better then war! Leave this to me...

"All troupes, code red"

"Get them out of there!"

Speculation
These are from Digital Spy, and two of them are red- herrings:
  • Donna's mother Sylvia wields an axe.
  • A jellyfish-like Rutan army makes an appearance (via a Sontaran flashback).
  • The Sontarans steal the TARDIS.
  • UNIT prepare to launch a nuclear strike.
  • Donna kills a Sontaran via the probic vent and booms out "back of the neck!"
  • The Valiant is put to good use by Colonel Mace.
  • The current whereabouts (and official title) of Alastair Lethbridge-Stewart are revealed.
  • Donna punches the real Martha in the face - believing her to be the clone.
  • Luke has devised a mating programme for his genius recruits.
  • The Doctor puts on a gas mask to combat the poisonous sky and squeals "are you my mummy?"
And these quotes also appear at some point in the episode. Wonder what the missing words are?!

"She's not like you. She's not a *******." (Soldier?)
"My God, they're like trolls."
"I've designed a ****** program." (Mating?)
"The bravery of idiots is bravery nonetheless."
"Isolate them as they perish."
"Are you my *****?" (Mummy?)
"We've lost our target practice."

(A giant thanks to Cameron and his fantastic site StuffOnTV for some of the images)

On the next time trailer donna is seen peering round a door with the tardis so maybe the sontarans capture the doc and donna flys the tardis to the sontaran space ship
OR
the sontarans capture the tardis with donna inside!!

haha a lot of these seem like red herrings. Hard to tell which one...

Anonymous said...

The most likely red herrings are:

Luke has devised a mating program for his genius recruits.

and

Donna punches the real Martha in the face believing her to be the clone.

or

The Doctor puts on a gas mask to combat the poisonous sky and squeals "are you my mummy?"

Donna would do something like punching the wrong Martha, but given the "Intru der window" joke from the episode "Dalek" in series 1 the writer for this episode would do a "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances" ref like that

Flying girl said...

I really hope 'Empty Child' reference is real, but they always seem to put these fun things as red herrings, like Doctor/Donna snowball fight or Doctor singing 'Calling dr. Jones'.
Would be fun to see jelly-like army even in a flashback!
I can actually see Donna slapping Martha clone/Martha.

Hopefully mating program is a red herring. (Their red tracksuits are somewhat reminiscent of red robes monks were wearing in 'Tooth and Claw')

Thanks for the link you put up, much appreciated!

Keep up the good work, an excellent round~up (as always).

Just posted my 'review'.

I can't tell straight out which of these are red herrings this week, they're all just so bizare. But I really hope the Empty Child/Doctor Dances nod is real. I would laugh so hard...and if Luke has made a mating programe...yeah, I'm hoping that one's a red herring.

The Doctor puts on a gas mask to combat the poisonous sky and squeals "are you my mummy?"

Luke has devised a mating programme for his genius recruits.

Apparently only two of these are red herrings. Sweet!

Luke is Davros. His mating program is Dalek.

"Red Riding Hood."

UNIT prepare to launch a nuclear strike.
definitely true "the planet is going nuclear"

If you have the slightest of thoughts that Donna might find herself trapped abord the Sontaran ship. Heres something to keep your ideas flowing.

Donna's mother wields an axe? True, she has to break the glass to get the gasses out and save Gramps.

The Sontarans steal the Tardis? True, you can see the Tardis and Donna in what seems to be a Sontaran ship?
http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/6341/tardisaw7.png

UNIT prepare to launch a nuclear strike? Well in the trailer their is a countdown and a Sontaran laughing: "The planet is going nuclear."

Luke has devised a mating programme for his genius recruits. True, Luke says in the trailer "It is time to reveal what our work has been for." Maybe not mating but cloning...

Oh, I still hope the "Are you my mummy" reference is in it, but I can't see how..

Anonymous said...

I don't know about the "mating" thing
they all seem to be teenagers in his accademy, might be giving the "wrong message" to the younger viewers

Anonymous said...

OOOOHHH please let the Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart refence be true! That would be BRILLIANT!

Barbara said...

The axe could be true, because someone needs to rescue Wilf from the car, and an axe could probably smash open the window or windscreen so they could pull Wilf out, because we know he survives because he is in later episodes.

Combom said...

youd have thought someone would have thought to break the window, it was my 1st thought!

Anonymous said...

ah but that would be too sensible and there would be no cliffhanger

Anonymous said...

the doctor was teaching donna to fly the tardis, is this anything to do with when rose martha and donna hav to fly the tardis when the doctor goes missing at the end of the series, maybe the doctor knows summit and is preparing them for it

Combom said...

doesnt the tardis need you to be in telepathic contact with it?

caitilin said...

well maybe the doctor is in the tardis recovering or whatever? cus then hes still there in the tardis and so the telepathic connection is still there.... i think

Anonymous said...

perhaps when it says Luke has devised a mating programme for his genius recruits. it doesnt mean with each other. it could be mating/cloning sontarans

I'm not sure if you've already seen this but I thought I'd post it, just in case you hadn't.

Doctor Who – The Doctor's Daughter Ep 6/13-Saturday 10 May
The Doctor meets the most important woman of his life on the distant planet Messaline, in the middle of an endless war.

But as General Cobb threatens genocide, and Martha is kidnapped by the Hath, the Doctor faces an even greater battle – can he find peace with his own child?

Thanks Wee Vixen, that info has already been added to the episode 6 page

Donna's mother Sylvia wields an axe.
- Possible, as at the end of TSS she went inside after she saw Grandad Noble choking to death in the car.

A jellyfish-like Rutan army makes an appearance (via a Sontaran flashback).
- Maybe?

The Sontarans steal the TARDIS.
UNIT prepare to launch a nuclear strike.
- Might be true, as someone said, Donna in the trailer turns.. to see a sontaran maybe?

Donna kills a Sontaran via the probic vent and booms out "back of the neck!"
- Hmm... Not sure

The Valiant is put to good use by Colonel Mace.
- A possibility, he could use it to 'Go Nucleur' as General Staal said in the trailer?

The current whereabouts (and official title) of Alastair Lethbridge-Stewart are revealed.
- Well I can't say I know who Alastair Lethbride-Stewart is?

Donna punches the real Martha in the face - believing her to be the clone.
- That might be the comedic side to the episode.

Luke has devised a mating programme for his genius recruits.
- 'perhaps when it says Luke has devised a mating programme for his genius recruits. it doesnt mean with each other. it could be mating/cloning sontarans' <- as anonymous said, it could be that?

The Doctor puts on a gas mask to combat the poisonous sky and squeals "are you my mummy?"
- I sincerely doubt it.

I think that the Sontarans are using the gas to make it a reasonable habitat for a war. The gas could be breathable to the Sontaran's greatest enemy, the Rutans. Maybe the Rutans need the gas to breath and the Sontarans think that Earth is the right size for a war. In doing so, the Sontarans wipe out the humans so that it is just Sontarans vs. Rutans

Anonymous said...

Sontarans need the gas to give earth the same atmosphere as sontar.

Shaun said...

...II just thought...maybe they are trying to poison the atmosphere. Maybe rip a hole in the ozone-layer or something. That would explain the title 'The poison sky'.

...just a thought.

Combom said...

ive thought that since hearing the program title, we know sontarans are ok with our air/atmos so maybe they are trying to poison us (and along the way, the bees?)

Flying girl said...

It seems like poisonous gas is too obvious, besides Doctor said they need it for something else.
Perhaps they use it to turn people into Sontarans?
They've turn people into someting else in every last episode: first into Adipose, then into Pyroville, and finally into an Ood. So maybe gas + mating program is related to this?

Yeah, looks like 'Are you my Mommy?" will be in it after all!

Sander said...

flying girl, you may be on to the story arc, come to think of it.

If you draw the line further, turning humans into Daleks? (Harriet Jones)

Anonymous said...

yea i suppose that could work but.... isnt it a little typical?

Flying girl said...

Yes, that's what I thought: Daleks already turned peopled into Daleks in series 1, but perhaps this year it's turning with a twist :) But it does seem to be forming a pattern. Of course, they can deviate from it in this two-parter and then come back to it again.

On a different note: you'd think TARDIS would have some sort of feature against being teleported by anyone and anything. Or Doctor could have build one. Next thing you know, it'll be carried away by some huge bird to feed its babies!

N. T. said...

Heh, wouldn't be the first time the TARDIS got carried away by a bird, either. (Just watched Infinite Quest.)

Flying girl said...

I know :) (That's kind of why I said it :) Also a bit strange that TARDIS is programmed to go to the nearest center of gravity in the event of disaster, instead of staying with the Doctor.

heyyahh. ok, look on pages for episode 11 and 12 and you will see a pic of donna getting nocked ova by a van and rose helping her.hello crazy cars taken ova by atmos maybe they tried to kill donna! and theres a pic of a sign saying greenhouse gases at all time high...hello the poison sky and with al the talk about the air being dirty it cud have something 2 do wif that sign about the gas and rose was there while they filmed that pic so who no's! its starting to make sense. and there are reports of billie piper and cathrine filming with soilders alough there are no pics except there are pics of the soilders and there was sum pics with them soilders covered in loads of gas. they were NOT unit soilders but rose was seen filming with them... and if ppl start to say "when the pic of the greenhouse gasses was took wif rose the doctor was wearing a brown suit so it cant be",well in the pics of rose on the beach wif the doctor and donna the doctor was caught wearing both brown and blue suits so you never know....

Anonymous said...

heeyahh im the 1 who just posted that thing about episode 11 and 12. also theres pics ov martha and mickey. martha is only in the 5 episodes and is not in the last 4 it has been confirmed she is only in 5 episodes.they wudent bring mickey bck before rose cos the doctor and jack were also there when mickey and martha were there.they wudent have a doctor/mickey reunion first every1 even the writers wudent do that. it just takes out the fun ov the scene when hes like "omg shes not in the paralell universe anymore how!?" But if he meets rose after mickey then whats the fun cos he knows rose will be bck at sum point.

Anonymous said...

What are those red things on the TARDIS doors?

dRAiN said...

Im pretty sure the red things on the doors are probably attatched to the TARDIS by the sontarans so they can zap it up to their ship in the sky. And their are probably some on all sides of it, just we only see the front.

And im pretty sure martha is in Epsiode 4,5,6 and then 12&13 yess??

Jess said...

Yup!

N. T. said...

Judging from the picture right above this sentence:

"And then off he pops to go find the real Martha and do a good old rescue!"

I think the clone Martha might try to flirt with the Doctor, and that's how he finds out. After all, he's got that same look on his face that he did in Smith and Jones... That would be a good segue into the whole 'wedding ring' theory.

Gaz said...

Pehaps that Luke is a clone of the real version in that picture of him with The Doctor, Donna & Martha.

Sageeth said...

Spoilers for those who haven't seen the episode yet.

Something to go along with people linking the whole idea of missing worlds and such. Why did the Sontarans need a new cloning planet? Something far more than because it is big and well suited and they need a lot of people. Perhaps they lost one (or more) breeding planets (if they had them before).

did anyone notice Rose, when the doctor called the sontarans and he came up on their screen and the TARDIS screen just before he appeared on the TARDIS screen just for a second Rose was seen saying doctor, she is trying to contact him, probably on any frequency, so did anyone see it

Anonymous said...

" probably on any frequency,"

do you mean rose could have been on all tv screens?

Anonymous said...

well thts not what i was getting at, i ment any frequency the doctor may use, but maybe if she dont get hold of him maybe she will do that
