6.5m for 'The Impossible Astronaut'

The sixth series of Doctor Who started yesterday with healthy figures of 6.5 million, even though it has been calculated as the least watched opener since 2005.

The episode saw the return of River Song as the four travelled to America in the 60s.

This is definitely a step up from the low figures we all saw last year, with only 5-odd million tuning in first time to see The Eleventh Doctor.

The initial overnight ratings are not the final ratings. The series averages 8-9 millions viewers ; fairly consistently with the Tenant years.
