Benedict Cumberbatch, star of the critically-acclaimed series Sherlock, revealed that he had considered the role of the Doctor, but turned it down.
The Sun reports that Cumberbatch spoke to Tennant about the opportunity but decided not to pursue the role, which was eventually given to Matt Smith.
"And anyway I didn't really like the whole package - being on school lunchboxes." He said.
Sherlock, written and created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, opened to 7.4 million viewers.

Sounds like he didn't go for it and so couldn't have been offered it, so he no more turned it down than I turned down going on Big Brother!
Baaaaaallllloooocccckkkksssss!
Well Matt Smith is a fantastic Doctor, I'm glad he got the role.
Beneict is a attention seeking berk, oh look at me i have one bafta to my name and maybe a sucessfull tv show and im only 45, what's that 45, he must dye his hair.
45? you kidding?
he only just turned 34 last week
I read this on Gallifrey Base:
That rumour was started by Th Sun, and you can't trust a word they say. Moffat has said that Matt auditioned for Watson but that he was more of a Sherlock Holmes, but that they'd already cast Cumberbatch in the role, so he had to turn him down. He then saw Matt audition for the Doctor a week later and they wanted him from the start. Cumberbatch wouldn't even have been able to audition for the Doctor because he wouldn't have had time to play both characters. We know that DW was shooting at roughly the same time as Sherlock, no way it could have worked. There are lots of silly people that get caught up n the hype on these boards, don't be one of them, they always make themselves look very foolish.
Wouldn't that contradict Moffat's statements of Matt being the first choice?
If you buy that I have some Sea side property in Arizona.
The Sun is notorious for their fake news stories. If it were sold in the US it would be Tabloid waiting at the check out reading.
