Planet Gallifrey: Darkness

Darkness

Well, Midnight hasl hit our TV screens with a loud whumph of excitement. Why is it a whumph? I have no idea... I just like the word.

Anyway, this episode was most definitely dark, claustrophobic and intense, exploring the true side of human behavior under extreme fear and pressure.

In my personal opinion, it was the most disturbing and frightening episode I've ever seen. More so than Blink or any other scary episode you care to think of.

The episode can now be seen on Youtube here, here, here, here and here

And Rose did indeed make a wee appearance! And it was so agonizingly missed by the Doctor as well... shame!

Plus, there was also mention of the Medusa Cascade, which we haven't had in a while. Maybe its still got some importance in the final 3 episodes.

Hooray!

Can't wait 'til our torrent wizards distribute it worldwide, circa 2 hours later. I remember thinking of this episode as a boring interlude, but the preview clip actually got my hopes up quite a bit. Wonder how the Doctor will manage without any companion by his side, though he's kinda been through this in VotD. And even if the episode turns out to be a flop, we've still got the "Turn Left" preview :)

Concentrate to the things that could give information to the people.

Could this be the episode where we see the doctor crying as he finally gets to see Rose!

Triple C

This is definitely the episode that sees the Doctor crying, but its not because he's seen Rose.

When Rose appears its only brief and once again, the Doctor misses it.

I can't wait just a few hours til I can watch it here in the States thanks to this site.Sci-Fi channel shows Dr.Who on Friday nights but we are about 3 episodes behind. They showed The Hornet And The Wasp last night.
I wish they would bring back Gallifrey even if it is in flashbacks or memories of the Doctor.I 'd like to see his planet and culture. They should also do another Dr.Who movie about the Time War I would like to know what happened and how the 8th Doctor became the 9th.I'm getting sick of comic book and video game movies oh yeah and remakes. With the current writers and computer effects that would make a great movie.

My Bad,I meant The Unicorn and the Wasp was shown last night on Sci-Fi.

That was a really great episode. I think it's fantastic how RTD manages to comment on human behaviour despite it being sci-fi. He deserves that OBE!

I saw it, was awesome.

Next time trailer was *WHAT*

Who else noticed that when Donna was asked to show her back there was a brief glimpse of what seemed like a baby Racnoss ;)

RED HERRINGS:

The true mastermind of the ill fate that happens to Donna in this episode will be familiar to fans of one of the Doctor Who spinoff shows. [Pshh, it's not the Trickster.]

Oliver Morgenstern from 'Smith And Jones' is back and in fine form. [Probably, if the Doctor is dead they'll probably run through some events that go wrong because of it, including the Plasmavore.]

Donna suggests that footage of a Titanic replica spaceship flying towards Buckingham Palace is actually from a sequel to the famous Leonardo DiCaprio/Kate Winslet film. [Very likely.]

There's a Wayne's World moment where Donna and Wilf sing Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. [Um... not as likely.]

Rose Tyler tells Donna that The Darkness is coming. Donna tells her that she saw them live in 2004 and they only had one good song. [Possible, I guess... what is it with these pop culture references???]

Donna insults someone by calling them Vera Duckworth. [True. Verified, I think.]

Mr Chaudhary's wandering hands cause Donna some consternation. [Sure, why not?]

Rose tells Donna two vital words to pass onto The Doctor. The first one is a name of an old enemy last seen in an escape pod. The second is "lives". [What is the deal with "Davros Lives"?]

Donna has a beetle on her back and soon Wilf finds antlers on his head too. [Hahahaha...]

No, but it could be a Torchwood baddie, maybe? Maybe Gray got out? Nahh... disturbing as that thought might be, I don't think they'd do that. A bit too convoluted.

Maybe stormwolf. I swear Donna is wearing Captain Jack's coat in the trailer. At 19s she's wearing a very long grey coat that's too big for her. But I'm probably wrong.

It may be referring to UNIT as we know they appear in the episode. But they've been in Doctor Who already so not exclusive to those who watch the spinoff show's... hmmm I don't know!

Jess, any spoilers from Digital Spy for Turn Left???

True, it could be Adam (who as far as I remember made the Torchwood team lose some of their memories - I didn't watch the episode, though, just heard about it), or some other Torchwood villain.

But I think DigitalSpy is doing what they usually do, which is play off the fan speculation to make us believe something that isn't true. Like in a previous episode, they hinted at a reference to Metebelis III crystals, because we were all thinking Donna would have a Metebelis spider on her back. WRONGGG! Similarly, we had all this speculation of the Trickster taking the Doctor out of time - if DigitalSpy is up to its usual tricks, that's a no go.

Probably. It didn't look nearly dark enough to be Jack's coat.

My favorite episode of this series by far. So gripping, so imaginative. I was hugely disappointed by the Moffat two-parter, so this is a pleasant surprise: everything I love about Doctor Who, if it was a bit dark.

I will stop gushing now, since I don't seem to have much that is substantive to say. Looking forward to next week!

One thing I really like about this season - and I didn't realize it until the Donna-lite episode, ironically - is that it's nice because the Doctor is actually enjoying traveling again as he hasn't since Rose left (IMO). Series 3 he just seemed so sad all the time; with Donna he seems to be enjoying life again. Too bad it's probably all going to be in upheaval again with the finale episodes coming up...

It always amazes me that these tightly budgeted, "weaker" episodes can really bring out the brilliance of the screen-writers. We had Blink and now this.

Well done RTD, well done.

I have to agree that this has been the best of the lot so far. RTD finally shows he can work at Moffat's level, even though last week's showing was less than stellar. I have been doubting if this season has the ability to live up to its potential, but this shines bright glimmer of hope that the season will finish as strong as last year's.

ooh ooh ooh, also, in terms of story arcness in "Midnight": lost moon of poosh was talked about. More lost planets.

Anonymous said...

Am I the only one that was disappointed in this episode?

True it was a doctor lite episode but there was absolutely no reason for the doctor at all.

It was an interesting story and character study but it would have been if it was a twilight zone episode and dr who wasn't mentioned.

As my friend said after the Michael Keaton Batman movie years ago: "It was a great movie but it wasn't Batman.

Oh, how great!! And finally more reality in Dr Who! It's so refreshing to see the real monsters for once -- human beings! No aliens or scary monsters, just panicking humans and what fear can make of all of us. Brilliant!

Jess, I absolutely agree: way scarier than Blink or anything else. And to think, all they had to do just be quiet for less than an hour!

Anonymous said...

Brilliant - very imaginative and dark. DW at its BEST. Bring on the next three weeks!

Anonymous said...

There wasn't any mentioning of a lost planet but if you remember clearly, the was a mentioning of 'The Lost Moon of Poosh'. Great episode though...by far the scariest in the series. Loved Sky Silvestry and Dee Dee Blasco. David Tennant was absolutely outstanding.

He just had to, didn't he?
Russel T. Davies just _had to_ write simply the best episode of the new Doctor Who just before leaving the show?
I hope RTD is going write 1 or 2 episode for series 5.

11/10

I just want to say that I liked the episode, and I'm glad that I'm not the only one. Everyone else in my family thought it would be better on a different show.

That seems to have emerged as a trend this season - the villains in Planet of the Ood and The Doctor's Daughter were basically the humans.

I think it was the davros' mind or spirit and that he'll come back for the final with a reel form...

I'm french and i enjoy your blog and doctor who too!!!

i liked the fact that this episode has as many distinctions from what we all used to as possible. 1) we never saw TARDIS 2) Doctor never said "Brilliant" 3) Doctor never put his glasses on 4) for the first time he had no companion at all 5) for the first time we didn't find out what was it 6) the first episode set in one room (which I think is always cool, because no writer in his right mind would ever done this if he wasn't sure it is brilliant) 7) God knows what else

Jess said...

Just to let you know. The Doctor doesn't say brilliant in every episode. He does put his glasses on briefly when the map first comes up and we hear the driver talking. And in the classic series there was an episode where the Doctor was companionless (twas called the Deadly Assassin)

But you're right, it was very very different from what we're used to and thats one reason why it was fanTAStic (said in a Northern accent)

>>ooh ooh ooh, also, in terms of story arcness in "Midnight": lost moon of poosh was talked about. More lost planets.<<

(Not sure I've said this elsewhere on here, but...)

I also have a feeling that the Doctor's name is another story arc. Several episodes have made at least somewhat of a big deal about how he hides his real name. And now, the last two episodes have made a HUGE deal of it. River saying his name in his ear changes everything, and now the fact that he won't say his real name makes the humans all the more suspicious and fearful of him in this episode.

When Sky said "Molto Bene" and "alonsy" and then the Doctor repeated them, it was totally chilling. Sent a tingle down my spine. That's the reason this episode was so outstanding - it didn't rely on clever effects, but instead a strong storyline and playing on the fear of the watching people. Nobody in real life fears a dalek, but this sort of ganging up human terror situation could really happen! Perhaps no sapphire waterfalls though....:-)
