Changes...

Hmph... well it disturbs me slightly since I'm in denial about the fact that Tennant will have to one day leave (WHY?!) but apparently both Doctor Who and Torchwood are in for some drastic changes...

By Ian M. Cullen

I was chatting to our friend Dr. Phibes today who has been a reliable source to SciFi Pulse over the years for Torchwood and Doctor Who and he has informed me that some pretty big changes are ahead for both shows.

First off on Torchwood things are going to change massively. Leaving the show are Burn Gorman [Owen Harper], Naoko Mori [Toshiko] and John Barrowman [Captain Jack Harkness], though it is likely that Barrowman will return now and then as Captain Jack in a recurring capacity.

Joining the team as a full time member as of season 3 will be Freema Agyeman who will step in as Martha Jones and take over the day to day running of Torchwood from Captain Jack. Remaining with the show will be Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper.

Another big change for Torchwood is the format of the show. Up until now the series has been aimed at a more grown up audience, and has been sold as a Science Fiction series for adults. This has allowed it plenty of latitude with regards to sexual innuendos and humour. Some of the humour may stay, but it will be dumbed down somewhat so as not to alienate the younger audience members.

A third season of Torchwood has indeed been commissioned, but thus far only for five episodes as apposed to the usual 13. Which is something, that has many in the industry somewhat puzzled, especially considering that the show is performing better than Doctor Who in the USA.

The above changes to Torchwoods format are so it can be shown in the Saturday evening slot that is usually occupied by Doctor Who. Producers at the BBC are looking to Torchwood to act as a buffer between seasons of Doctor Who.

So when Doctor Who isn’t on the air. Torchwood will be there to fill that void in time and space that fans have when waiting an entire six months for the DR. Who Christmas special.

While on the subject of Doctor Who there is a good reason why Catherine Tate is leaving after the one season. Much like Martha it was planned from the start. Though the big difference is Donna whom Tate plays in the series will turn out to be a pretty nasty piece of work. Which is why we have a series 4 finale that will include the return of Captain Jack, Sarah Jane Smith, Martha Jones and Rose Tyler.

In addition to this my source has informed me that David Tennant will be leaving the series and will regenerate during the last few minutes of the 2009 Christmas Special.

Apparently for the last few months filming has been underway on the four Doctor Who specials. The first of which will be the 2008 Christmas Special followed by two specials in the year and ending with the 2009 Christmas special which is in its final six weeks of production now. Tennant will officially have left the series in two weeks time when he finishes filming the final moments of the 2009 Christmas Special.

Tipped to take over from Tennant is Full Monty Actor Robert Carlyle though. One insider at the BBC claims that negotiations are currently underway with the actor.

Although the above has come from a pretty reliable source. I ask that you treat the above as you would any other rumour until such times as the BBC actually make some kind of official statement about both series.

I wouldn't mind Carlyle that much... he's better than some of the people that have been rumored to take over as Doctor number 11...

Oh, and as always, none of this is confirmed so lets not jump to huge drastic conclusions :)

Hello to Australia!
There's been no official date set yet for the start of series 4. Most people think that it will be around Easter time, or the beginning of April... hope that help.

Oh, and hooray for Rose!

I always knew that it would happen eventually but it never really struck me until now that David Tennent won't always be the doctor. I remember that was ready to hate him when he 1st started because he wasn't going to be MY doctor, my 1st doctor. Now, I can't imagine him being replaced. I'm all sad now...

I really do hope that David won't leave by regenerating in the 2009 Christmas Special.I want him to stay for more than 1 series!!!!!!!!!:(:(:(:(:(:(Anyway,if you consider it,I suppose he has stayed the longest(for 3 series:Series 2,3 & 4) and Ten is,was and always will be my Doctor. Also,I really hope that the rumour you posted about Torchwood isn't true.I suppose it would be...'okay' for Jack,Toshiko or even Owen for that matter to leave but..lose the violence, the humour and the innuendos too?I mean,COME ON!Why should THAT happen?!Could somebody explain that to me?

I think Tennant should stay simply because the Doctor only has three regenerations left in this lifetime.

Tom Baker stayed for seven seasons.

Hmmm... whoever follows on from Tennant will have some huge, overly large shoes to fill... Tennant was me first Doctor :)

But yes, so far Tom Baker has been the longest serving Doctor and yes, Tennant should stay forever because I love him so. But not just because they're running short on regenerations.

Come on! This is scifi! It would be easy to give the Doctor more regenerations if they had to. The Master was given a fresh set of regenerations when the Time Lords resurrected him for the Time War.

Actually... since it is the Time Lords that monitor the regenerations (they have to ability to grant more or take them away) and they no longer exist... then surely the Doctor has unlimited regenerations now...

Anyway. Sorry, I rambled off a bit there...

I read the scifi portal page in question a little while ago and it is just awful. torchwood becoming some sort of stupid kidsy show, I mean come on the reason it was created and also the reason I find it so fun to watch is because It a little more sexy, gory, and a little more scary. It was also created for the character of Captain Jack when it was announced that he was leaving dr who. As much as I love martha in torchwood taking 3/4 of the characters out would be really stupid. As for Dr who, Donna being sinister does not sound cool, and obviously Tennant leaving is probably the saddest of all. :(

Oh I forgot. Tennant stated that after finishing halet and stuff he would be returning to cardiff to film the 2009 specials in January so the bit about him leaving already can't be true.

Jess said...

Aye, its well known that he's doing the 2009 specials... and after that...??? But I've still heard rumors going around that he's going to regenerate part-way through the specials.

sorry I sould have been clearer. I meant that it is not true that fiming ends in two weeks for the 2009 specials.

Jess said...

Ah, right, yes. I understand now. Yep, you're certainly right. They're still filming the finale at the moment and after that they're doing the Christmas special, then Tennant is off to be Hamlet and coming back throughout the year to film the specials.

That torchwood information cannot be true. Well, I understand Burn Gorman leaving, but Mori and Barrowman? Would GDL stay?

Sorry, I shouldn't be ranting about torchwood on a doctor who site.

Hey its fine! You're perfectly free to express your opinions. If I didn't want you to talk about it, I wouldn't have posted it.

Devasted. Durza from Eragon as 11? NOOOOOOOOO!!! Then again, I was devastated when Eccleston regenerated. Swore I’d hate the new guy, would never watch the show again, but soon changed my mind. Gotta have me Tennant, MY doctor, perfect hyperactive ten. Heavily in denial with you, Jess.

On a lighter note, for some hilarious DT moments from Who and other projects, check out my favourite fanvid on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHyYXpIQmtQ. We all need cheering up. Poor guy gets smacked around rather a lot and warning, you won’t get the song out of your head for days, but so well done. Don’t go DT, we love you!!!

These rumors are preposterous. If Tennant were leaving, why bend over backward to accommodate his schedule with the 2009 specials? Why not just off 10 at Christmas and start a new series with Robert Carlyle or the guy from Jekyll or Julian Walsh or Jason Statham or any of the multitude of British actors who've been rumored, in various levels of trustworthiness, to be Tennant's successor? And Torchwood as a kid's show? They already have a version of that, it's called The Sarah Jane Adventures and from what I hear it's done well enough for itself to merit an expanded time slot. Really, when you think about it, they're covering all their bases right now: kids with SJA, family viewing with DW, and post-watershed with TW. Why mess with that?

Tennant's been cagey enough in his approach to dealing out information that I wouldn't rule out his departure, and television execs are profoundly stupid enough that I wouldn't rule out the Torchwood rumors either, but I think this kind of thing is just being sewn to whip poor Who fans into an uproar, and in lieu of any actual news.

I agree with you, I don't think theres much truth to them... and I recently heard that the 2009 specials were planned AGES ago, so Tennant got work with the RSC because of the specials, not the other way round.
