Not that we wont miss RTD, his name is so easy to write... hah, no seriously, Mr Davies was a very good head writer, and he's come a long way since his Chuckle Brothers era, but he's decided to step down and I wish him well.
Anyway, this is what the BBC news people have to say about it:
Russell T Davies is to step down as executive producer of Doctor Who, the BBC has announced.
Davies is credited with breathing new life into the show which he brought back to television screens in 2005.
Bafta-winning writer Steven Moffat will succeed Davies as lead writer and executive producer of the fifth series of Doctor Who.
Davies will remain in charge of four specials to be shown in 2009.
The fifth series, with Moffat at the helm, is scheduled to be broadcast on BBC One in Spring 2010.
Moffat has already written some of the most memorable Doctor Who episodes of recent times, including The Girl in the Fireplace and The Empty Child.
Earlier this month, he picked up the best writer Bafta for the Blink episode of series three which featured terrifying weeping angels.
Moffat said: "I applied before but I got knocked back 'cos the BBC wanted someone else. Also I was seven.
"Anyway, I'm glad the BBC has finally seen the light and it's a huge honour to be following Russell into the best - and the toughest - job in television.
"I say toughest 'cos Russell's at my window right now, pointing and laughing."

yay! i love his stories! will RTD be writing occasional episodes?
Awesome. I mean, I'll probably miss RTD as the head writer, but still. Great choice for his successor. =)
Now we only need David to stay on and everything will be perfect!!
david plus moffat would be amazing...he better stay!
this certainly isnt bad news! dowcor who should last a few more years with moffat at the controls!
I'm going to miss RTD, because he brought Who back to life (and Russell is my first name!), but I love Moffat's stories, and I think he will do an amazing job.
Awww, I'll miss Russell. :( I loved his stories and I loved listening to him in episode commentaries. I'll really miss hearing his "Hurray!"
However, I can't express just how happy I am that they kept the filling of his position in-house. Moffat's great and it's so much better than bringing in a total stranger.
THE KING IS DEAD! LONG LIVE THE KING!
I'm really gonna miss Russell, though. And how's Moffat going to find the time with his new Tintin movie coming out?!
Wow, Moffat is really good! I'm glad for him, plus his episodes are awesome! Kudos to Russell for doing such a great job!
Tintin! LOL I loved that Belgian buffoon.
Moffat? Do my eyes decieve me or has my dream come true!?
I wish luck to RTD and his career. He brought back the series and gave it a new spin. I'm positive Moffat will be a superb successor.
As a general doctor who fan, I'm thrilled, he's a brilliant writer.
But as a rose fan...i'm a little less enthused by this. After all, moffett did write GitF, an episode that makes me sick to my stomach everytime I see it. I have a feeling that, after Russel's three specials, we'll never get another rose mention again. DX
Well, you've got to admit there were some good Rose/Doctor moments in "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances."
What's so bad about TGITF?
What's so bad about TGITF?
(blinks) you're kidding, right?
>>What's so bad about TGITF?
Not a single blessed thing...
Unless you're a Rose shipper, then it's the worst thing evar!!!111
Even if your a Doctor/Rose you can still like TGitF. I for one am very excited about Moffat taking over and Im a Doctor/Rose shipper.
Hmmm...No mention if David is staying on as the Dr. in series 5. I was hoping they would give us at least a crumb.

I must admit I don't have the same feelings about RTD leaving. His scripts too often got bogged down in excessive silliness. Not that he didn't write some good episodes, but he disappointed more often than he delivered. That said, he should be credited with helping Who get back on its feet and he was supposed to be one heck of a script editors.
This is going to be a big change for Moffat. Instead of penning just one episode a year, it is up to him to pen four, as well as serve as producer and script editor. I love the guy's writing, but... man, that has got to be a tough job. It can burn you out pretty quick. Hope he can do it.
That said, this pretty much confirms that Tennant will be leaving as well, at the end of next season's movies, that is. That would give Moffat a fresh slate to start with: New Doctor, new companions. Also, has anyone heard about whether the BBC has cut any new deals with the Nation estate to keep bringing back the Daleks? I thought the deal they worked out was pretty much up at the end of this season.
Oh, great news! I do hope he can manage 4/5 scripts per year and do the same lovely job! Also would be nice if RTD stayed as regular writer to do an occasional episode, maybe? :)
God, I hope David Tennant stays, maybe this'll be something to entice him to stay, to work more with Stephen Moffat? Let's hope so!
Yeaaaaah!!!
In other news, in case anyone here is as big a nerd as I am, did you see the new Doctor Who roleplaying game coming out this summer? There have been other ones before, but this is officially licensed, not a fan conversion: http://www.cubicle-7.com
My question: What are the stats for K-9?
The thought of Moffat guiding the season arcs makes me feel somewhat giddy; spending what will probably be two years imagining what he'll do is going to drive me NUTS, though. Where's the TARDIS when you need it?!
I gotta say: I knew it.
I just knew they were gonna have Steven Moffat take over for RTD.
I'm so happy! I have loved every single one of his episodes, even TGITF, and I am a huge Rose/Doctor shipper.
(For those out there who are among the many R/D fans and are wondering why I loved TGINF it's because The Doctor was infatuated with Reinette, but was still clearly in love with Rose as illustrated by the stargazing scene. X) Major points went to Moffat for that little moment.)
Bah, I'm a Doctor/Rose shipper, but I *loved* GitF. It was a beautiful episode.
Did anyone see the BBC breakfast show this morning?
Penelope Wilton who plays Harriet Jones was on it and was asked if she was returning. She said she couldnt possible comment but the fact that she didnt outright deny it makes me think that she is..
Yipee! Glad to see RTD leave... Gives the series a chance to move on.
I appreciate everything RTD has done to bring the series back to TV and help grow the fan base. Yet as a fan of the classic series, I have issues with some of the "new directions" he has decided to pursue. I love the work Moffat has done for the show (ie. Blink, Empty Child) and have high hopes for him.
Change happens. It's someone enthusiastic about the show who has the previous guy's blessing, and that's the best one can ask for.
Plus it means the Master might be coming back sooner than later, which is A+++.
Hooray! Just love his imagination. I don't think we've really had enough Moffatt to predict whether Rose will go out the window, but we have had enough to predict some really creative stories. Woop woop!
Will this mean less Daleks?
>>Plus it means the Master might be coming back sooner than later, which is A+++.<<
I dunno, I think that would cheapen the end of Series 3. "Yes, I know I refused to regenerate, but I changed my mind. Hello again!" Eh.
Bringing Rose back is one thing. She didn't want to go, so of course she'll be fighting tooth and nail to get back to him.
But...the Master? Hm...they'd have to give me some REALLY good reasons why he's back before I'd accept it as a good thing, personally.
I personally think the Master instituted some devilishness to escape imprisonment without actually dying. (Perhaps the ring has something to do with it.) But you're right, it would cheapen Last of the Time Lords a little bit.
i just saw the new advert! rose is coming back and she says:
"its comeing donna, the darkness is comeing"
what is the darkness?
Another title instead of "Moffatness", could of been "Homoless" :)
I sick of david morrisey becoming a the 11th doctor that I don t want I want DT to stay in doctor who Studio
