At this point I have no opinion on him (except he should change his hair. Please.) How could I? I don't know him and I've never seen him act before.
I love Tennant and he was technically my first Doctor so its gonna be hard to say goodbye to him, but I have faith in Moffat. Plus people were dumbfounded when they heard Billie Piper or Catherine Tate were going to be companions - and look how popular they were!
The first time I saw Matt (hmmm, his name isn't as fun to type as Tennant) it was in the special Confidential episode and, to be honest, the first thing I though was "he's not as eloquent as Tennant is".
But thats really got nothing to do with it since he'll be acting off a script.
And then I thought "hahaha, he uses his hands to express meaning" which I guess isn't that uncommon but it sort of feels like a Doctory thing to do.

So yes, I can't form an opinion yet (very boring I know) but as long as he can convey the energy and humor as well as the age and wisdom of the Doctor then its all good!
Media coverage
Life the Universe and Combom did an utterly fantastic job of getting all the media frenzy, so if you want to read all about that, I suggest you see these two posts:
The question now is: What do you all think?

I first watched him in Ruby in the Smoke a long while back, and thought he was great. I'm very excited to see him take on this role.
augh... new teeth thats weird. Ok honestly i feel like i am in a deep state of depression. I love doctor who and i think david is a great doctor. I will miss him greatly in my mind he is the one and only doctor. I will give matt smith a chance. the new head writer and producer made some of the best episodes like girl in the fire place and blink that are just fantastic. I just pray i get my chance to write for the show. So i say on ward. "Allons-y"!!!!
Ha, Jess - I thought the exact same thing(s)! ... 1) about his hair, and 2) about his finger fiddling. *lulz* I DO hope they change the hair... his look as-is-now puts me in mind of vampires for some reason (noooo!) but I'm thinking they might not change it... 'cause in the Confidential episode somebody mentioned his hair in the audition being a good thing or some such. =P Oh well... I guess we can't expect the new guy to be like his predecessor (in terms of looks and personality)... that's not the Doctor way (Tom Baker to Peter Davison was a world of a difference, but I loved them both!)... I guess we'll just have to wait and see. =D
Glad you're back! Hope everything's going well. =)
Matt Smith doing jazz hands, wiggling his fingers while saying 'Nerve-wracking...exciting... exciting" was what sold me on him as a potential Doctor, I have to say. Having tracked down various interviews with him, read up on his acting career to date etc, I think he'll be fantastic!
Having not seen him in anythin yet, my first reaction was 'Wha? Where are these big names that have been circulating? Didn't Moffat want an older bloke?'
But after watching the interview and reading up on him a bit, I think that Matt Smith is gonna be a great Doctor. Here's to a year more of DT, then begins the age of MS!
OMFG! He is an EMO kid!
Bad Photo... bad hair... Let's see what he can do.
I miss Eccleston. I will miss Tennant.
But I will give a chance to the producers and this new doctor (please, don't break my heart!)
And make more episodes!! Americans make 22 in a season! We need more british good stuff!
I think he looks like the arithmetic mean of Eccleston and Tennant, which is weird. Strong facial bone structure like Eccleston, but hair and skinny like Tennant. I was hoping for someone a little more...er, different. Even in this photo he's basically wearing a hybrid of their Doctor costumes.
Still, I'm sure he'll be great. Looking forward to seeing what he'll do with the characer.
Can't help getting emotional about Tennant leaving, though...hopefully they'll give him a great swan song.
I wonder how DT's doctor will die....
When i first saw him i did not like the hair. I hope they change the hair style. If they spike it up like tennant's then i think it will do.
The costum in the picture will also do.
I have not heard of Matt, but it is all down to the acting. How he acts depends on if he is a good doctor.
David Tennant was brilliant and will be missed.
What are you on about, I love his hair!! He looks brilliant, too. Very Doctorish. Can't wait to see him in 2010!!
I think I'll survive without David. I coped with Chris' departure, and it's what the show is all about.
Good job Jess. :D
he is a very good doctor but I'm still going to miss DT but they do kill him off by someone good that we've all seen before. (big spoiler!!!!=))
......................................................................................................THE MASTER
Emo looking douche. Thank you Steven for KILLING 40 years of Doctor Who. I was hoping for the best season of Dotor Who ever with DT and Moffat. Who knew DT who backout and Moffat would turn out to be a douche, and would cast a douche. DT brought DW a larger younger audience, so I'm sure they what to retain that group. I guess Emo douches is the present. I for one am Who'd out. :(
We will have to wait and see not sure what i think about his age. the fact they keep saying he is young and looks old i think they been drinking i see him and think he's in high school. but i will say this i have just watched over the weekend his shows with Billie and i feel he can act and he has some potential. the next big puzzle piece is who will be a companion to travel with him and i would say sally sparrow or even a alien of some kind like the cat people. then i read a small blog over the weekend i will try to find again saying Moffat went young because the doctor might travel alone for a while and just have guest stars each ep not sure what i think of that also. we will see and his hair is crazy now but in all the stuff i watched this weekend it does look OK so it can be good on screen.
Glad to see you back Jess missed you tons
Dan
I wasn't sure at first, but he had the right sort of eccentricity in DWC and his interview, so I'm okay with it.
Don't scrap the hair, though. It works. But he needs a less modern, less casual costume - fortunately, the publicity shots I'm pretty sure are of the actor's own clothing.
How about not lose the hair altogether, but tone it down? I think I'm getting old, I want to see his eyes. LOL!
augh … the hair, that’s weird …
I think I’m with the crowd that seem to see Mr Smith’s hair as the one thing he should maybe be changing …
But I saw the interview recorded as part of the Confidential episode, and the MINUTE he did one gesture –a kind of tumbling gesture with his hands, whilst his fingers were wiggling,– I thought “He’ll be FINE!” (I immediately started thinking of the way William Hartnell, in the stories of his I’ve seen, used gesture as a key way the character expressed himself, in the part, and I dare people to argue about it.)
But, for those of us who miss David Tennant, can I point out I still feel upset Tom Baker left? And Peter Davison? And Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, et al?
Dr Who thrives on charge, in part, because the Doctor changes, and renews every-so-often. It keeps our favourite show new, fresh, and watchable.
This is not a killing.
This is a renewal.
For those of us that feel this is a betrayal, it’s not
I'm still wishing that Colin Baker got to have a decent stint in the role of the Doctor. I've been enjoying listening to him in the Big Finish audios though.
I only saw him in 'The Ruby and the smoke' and 'Shadow in the North" and like him very much! In fact, that was my first reaction: it's Jim! So, I think he'll be a good doctor and hopefully a great one too:) I like his photo on Doctor Who BBC main page, he's got some devilish twinkle in his eyes (could be photoshop, of course :)
And I do like the hair!
A love story between the companions rather than between the Doctor and a companion would be more than welcome, in my opinion.
Now THERE’s someone who didn’t get a good crack at the job!
And the companions will be interesting to see!
Particuarly when Jack turns up.

"Hmm The 11th Doctor s Companions must be Male and female because they are New Companions to join the 11th Doctor in 2010."
You mean they can't be both ?!?

Ooh, Matron !!!
When I got the news my first thought was " No way, are they serious?" I expected someone else because of Moffat... but I think, well, I want to think, and I really want to believe these lines I'm tipping in...: but he will be ok.
I needed days to be able to describe what I don't like about him... and why I don't like him. It's not only his age (although he IS too young) but he doesn't have a real style, and right now I'm not talking about his hair (they DO look terrible)... but about his acting. He's new to me but I have seen a few scenes with him...
Yes, when Tennant took over they complained about his age... but when you watch Blackpool, you can already catch a few glimpse of DT's ( I will miss these initials...) Doctor. There aren't exactly many shows around giving you the chance to add something like a "personal touch" to it ... and I really don't know how Matt Smith's "personal touch" should/could look like because he doesn't seem to have it yet...
And for his hair:
Do you remember RiverSong saying something about a "new hair cut"?
Right...
I was quite pleased with Matt's casting. Really surprising "out of nowhere" choice by Moffatt after all the David Morrisey/Paterson Joseph/James Nesbitt/Rhys Ifans, etc speculation. I'm wondering if the outfit he's wearing in the picture is actually his Doctor costume. We'll see! Now the NEXT big question is...What will cause Ten to regenerate into 11???
I'm really delighted that Matt Smith has been cast as the Doctor.
I very much enjoyed his performances as the sidekick of Sally Lockhart (played by Billie Piper) in "Ruby in the Smoke" and "Shadow in the North". He's a very good actor who belies his age and can appear considerably more mature than he actually is.
Apart from that, there is now a substantial amount of egg on a lot of faces, both in the press and in on-line fandom, of those who assumed that Patterson Joseph had already been chosen. I predicted in a comment on this site some time ago, that the 11th Doctor would be somebody relatively unknown who hadn't been suggested in the press or the betting yet.
I hate to say I told you so, but well............. I told you so, LOL!!!!!!
OMG!! I really don't want David 2 leave. He was my first doctor eva!!
I haven't seen Matt Smith in anything before so i have no opinion *His hair isn't as good as David's* but that's it!!
*sniff* how will they kill our beloved ten off? *sniff sniff*
t h e 1 0 t h d o c t o r f o r e v e r !
And I can t wait to see Matt smith as The New Doctor.LOLZ
doctor who is about change, when christopher left and david came in i said david would never be as good, but i was so wrong. he is great, i love david tennant now. and i'm sure matt smith will be awesome, i can't wait to see him as the doctor. and i can't wait to see who he will be travelling with.
but david tennant will missed, by all, including myself.
wat is wrong with u all, matt smith looks so... doctorish. I love his hair, i just hope he has a good personality and compainion. and some romance plz.otherwise the doctors daughter, that would be good. more aliens too, something new and dangerous. and new planets.
but i will miss david, he is sooooo good as the doctor. but doctor who is change, and its still the doctor woth the some memories.
can't wait!!!
I think he is a great choice! I hope he does well!
not to appear ignorant but around the 11th regeneration of the doctor shouldnt the character of the Valeyard begin to emerge in his personality??
That all depends: in the classic version of the series, they might well have done.
However, I’m also thinking that Russell T. Davies —I’m told — worked on the Virgin New Adventures, which is where I feel he’s taken a lot of the feel of the new series.
And it strikes me that Moffat’s work for the series also carries on in that vain.
What I’m trying to say here, is the the series does not, necessarily have to adhere completely to the previously established continuity.
Don’t forget that, after all, the original series destroyed Atlantis, at least three times.
