Fifth Doctor Companions

Name: Adric
Race: Alzarian
Time of Origin: Unknown
Planet of Origin: Alzarius

Adric first appears in 'Full Circle'. Attempting to escape from the mysterious Mistfall that is threatening his community, he stumbles across the TARDIS, which has been drawn into E-Space via a wormhole. He stowed away when the TARDIS left Alzarius and, when discovered, becomes a companion.

With a brilliant mathematical mind and sporting a star-shaped badge for mathematical excellence, Adric is also very well aware of his own intelligence. This, coupled with his relative immaturity, leads to a personality that is abrasive and crosses over into arrogance. However, it is obvious that Adric also desperately seeks validation from the Doctor and is often hurt and resentful if he feels he is being sidelined or unable to contribute.

Adric is present during the Fourth Doctor's regeneration and continues to travel in the TARDIS with the new Doctor, but his travels come to an end in 'Earthshock' when he tries to stop a ship from crashing into prehistoric Earth. He dies in the crash, while his fellow crewmates watch in horror on the TARDIS viewscreen.

Adric's death affects the Doctor deeply, as he feels somehow respnsible - Adric's name is the last word the Fifth Doctor says regenerates.

Name: Tegan Jovanka
Race: Human
Time of Origin: 1981
Planet of Origin: Earth

Tegan first appears in 'Logopolis'. On her way to Heathrow Airport to start her new job, her car suffers a flat tire. She enters a roadside police box to seek help, not knowing that it is actually the TARDIS. She is present when the Fourth Doctor falls from the a radio telescop and regenerates

Tegan is stubborn, loud, and direct, with a no-nonsense manner and not afraid to speak her mind. While she often bickers with her companions as well as with the Doctor, her strength of character keeps them together and her loyalty to her fellow crewmates is unquestionable.

Despite her strong front, however, her adventures with the Doctor, both thrilling and terrifying, eventually take a psychological toll. She is deeply upset by the death of Adric. After being left behind in Heathrow due to a misunderstanding at the end of 'Time-flight', she returns to the TARDIS later in 'Arc of Infinity'.

Eventually, the loss of several of her friends and the carnage surrounding the events of 'Resurrection of the Daleks' prove too much and she bids an emotional good-bye to the Doctor and Turlough in 1984 London.

Name: Nyssa
Race: Trakenite
Time of Origin: 1981
Planet of Origin: Traken

Nyssa is an aristocratic native of Traken. She aids the Doctor and Adric when the Master wrests control by murdering her stepmother. She herself is hypnotised and kidnapped by the Master after he takes control of her father's body.

After being freed from his control, she is brought to Logopolis and discovers that Traken has been destroyed as a side effect of the Master's tampering. She subsequently joins the TARDIS crew, and witnesses the Fourth Doctor's regeneration into the Fifth.

During her adventures, Nyssa displays a profound ability to draw as well as a previously unseen psychic ability when she is contacted by the Xeraphin.

When the TARDIS crew arrive on the derelict space station, Nyssa's adventures with the Doctor come to an end, as – to Tegan's horror – she elects to stay on board the Space Station in order to help free the enslaved guards and turn the station into a real hospital.

Name: Vislor Turlough
Race: Trion
Time of Origin: 1983
Planet of Origin: Trion

When Turlough first appears in 'Mawdryn Undead', he is a student at a public school, but it becomes apparent that he is not what he seems. He is contacted by the malevolent Black Guardian, who offers to take him home if he kills the Doctor. He also appears familiar with concepts of time travel. At the end of the serial, Turlough asks to accompany the Doctor and becomes part of the crew, despite suspicions.

Turlough finds himself unable to decide whether or not to carry out his assignment from the Black Guardian, but eventually rejects him in favor of loyalty to the Doctor. Although always slightly cowardly, with excellent instincts of self-preservation and a streak of ruthlessness, his relationship with the Doctor and Tegan improves with time.

In 'Planet of Fire', it is revealed that Turlough is a native of the planet Trion, having become a political exile to Earth following a civil war. Also revealed for the first time is Turlough's first name, Vislor. Turlough discovers that political prisoners are no longer mistreated on Trion and decides it is time to return home.

Name: Kamelion
Race: Android
Time of Origin: Unknown
Planet of Origin: Xeriphas

When first encountered by the Doctor in 'The King's Demons', Kamelion is a tool of the renegade Time Lord, the Master.

Although Kamelion is sentient to a degree, it is also extremely weak-willed, and therefore open to manipulation by any strong personalities around it. The Doctor frees Kamelion from the Master's grip, and it joins the Doctor in the TARDIS.

It eventually falls under the Master's influence again in the serial 'Planet of Fire'. Kamelion finally begs the Doctor to destroy it, and the Doctor reluctantly honours that request.

Name: Peri Brown
Race: Human
Time of Origin: 1984
Planet of Origin: Earth

Peri first appears in 'Planet of Fire', in which she encounters the Doctor and Turlough on the island of Lanzarote. Peri asks to join the Fifth Doctor on his travels, while Turlough departs to return to his home planet of Trion.

Peri is present when the Fifth Doctor regenerates into the Sixth at the end of 'The Caves of Androzani' and continues to travel with him.

Peri is a bright, spirited young woman, who travels with the Doctor because, like many of his companions, she wants to see the universe. Although she shares a more abrasive relationship with the Sixth Doctor, there is an undercurrent of affection in their verbal sparring.

In the second segment of the Trial story arc, 'Mindwarp', Peri is abducted by a slug-like creature named Kiv, who apparently transplants his brain into her body. Soon after, the Doctor is led to believe that Peri is dead, and is severely distressed by this. It is later revealed that the evidence of Peri's death was faked. Peri has, in fact, survived and married King Yrcanos of Thoros Alpha, a warrior king.
