Name: Sarah-Jane Smith
Race: Human
Time of Origin: 20/21st Century
Planet of Origin: Earth
Sarah first appears in 'The Time Warrior', where she has managed to infiltrate a top secret research facility by posing as her aunt. She sneaks into the TARDIS while the Doctor is preparing to follow the trail of a kidnapped scientist through time, and becomes involved in the subsequent adventure.
Sarah then finds herself working with the Third Doctor and UNIT on a number of occasions. She is present when he regenerates into the Fourth Doctor at the end of 'Planet of the Spiders', and continues to accompany him on his journeys through time and space.
As a companion she is confident and inquisitive, and possesses a sharp mind as well as a sharp tongue. She is also something of a feminist — in her first appearance she is infuriated when the Doctor asks her to make coffee, and she often verbally spars with fellow companion Harry, who has an old-fashioned and unintentionally patronizing attitude towards her.
In spite of the dangerous and frightening situations she often finds herself in, she loves adventure and risk, and in spite of her outward complaints, is always thrilled to go off in search of more adventure. She shares a rapport with both the Third and Fourth Doctors.
Her decision to leave the TARDIS and return home co-incides with the Doctor receiving a summons to his home planet, Gallifrey, to which he was forbidden to take humans to at that point.Sarah-Jane met the Doctor again in the episode 'School Reunion'. Here, both she and the Doctor had the same plan of checking out a school that seemed to have unusually high test results... at first she was delighted to see the Doctor, and slightly dismissive of Rose, who saw her immediately as competition. Sarah-Jane later reveled to the Doctor that she felt like he had abandoned her on Earth, even dropping her off in the wrong place!
Although the Doctor asked her to travel with him again, she decided to stay realizing that she had her own life to live and should wast it waiting for him. She said her final goodbye to the Doctor and he left her with a new model of K9 - since the old one had been blow up.
Name: Harry Sullivan
Race: Human
Time of Origin: 20th Century
Planet of Origin: Earth
Harry is a doctor in the Royal Navy, who is attached as medical officer to UNIT, the military organisation to which the Doctor acts as scientific advisor. In 'Robot', after the Doctor's third regeneration, Sullivan is called in to attend him, and ends up travelling aboard the TARDIS.
Harry is rather old-fashioned and stereotypically English in his attitudes. He is depicted as possessing great bravery and a "can-do" attitude, adapting well to the many strange situations in which he finds himself. He can, however, also be quite clumsy and unsubtle.

Name: Leela
Race: Human
Time of Origin: Far future
Planet of Origin: Unknown
Leela first appeared in 'The Face of Evil', where she aids the Doctor against the mad god Xoanon. Although the Doctor at this point was content to travel alone, Leela forces her way into the TARDIS and continues to accompany the Doctor on his journeys.
Although Leela is a primitive, she was also highly intelligent, grasping advanced concepts easily and translating them into terms she could cope with. Despite the Doctor's attempts at "civilizing" her, however, Leela is strong-willed enough to continue in her savage ways. She usually dresses in animal skins, armed with a knife or a set of poisonous Janis thorns which she does not hesitate to use on people who threatened her, much to the Doctor's disapproval.
During 'The Invasion of Time', when the Sontaran invaded of the Doctor's home planet, Gallifrey, Leela meets and falls in love with Andred, a native Gallifreyan. She decides to stay behind to be with him. The first K-9 remains with her.
Race: Robot
Time of Origin: 51st Century
Planet of Origin: An asteroid near Titan
During 'The Invisible Enemy', the first K-9 was introduced as the creation of Professor Marius, a scientist working for the Bi-Al Foundation. A mobile computer, K-9 was constructed in the shape of a dog as a substitute for the one Marius had left back on Earth.
All the K-9s referred to whoever owned them as "Master" or "Mistress" depending on their gender. The units were programmed to be both loyal and logical, with a penchant for taking orders literally, almost to a fault.
Highly intelligent, with an extensive database and equipped with sophisticated sensors as well as a laser weapon built into its nose, K-9 was given to the Doctor by Marius. The first K-9 left the Doctor when he gave it to Leela as a gift.
Race: Robot
Time of Origin: 51st Century
Planet of Origin: An asteroid near Titan
K-9 Mark II was more mobile than its predecessor, and exhibited the ability to sense and warn others of danger. It was with the Doctor and Romana when they were shunted into the parallel universe of E-Space, and was severely damaged by time winds during the events of 'Warriors' Gate'.
The damage was such that K-9 could only function in E-Space, and when Romana decided to stay there and forge her own path, the Doctor gave K-9 to her.

Name: Romana I
Race: Time Lady
Time of Origin: Gallifrey
Planet of Origin: Rassilon Era
The White Guardian originally assigns Romana to assist the Doctor during the quest for the Key of Time. Romana first appears in 'The Ribos Operation', and was intended as a contrast to her predecessor, the savage Leela.
Romana is initially haughty and somewhat arrogant, looking down upon the Doctor, whom she considers to be her academic inferior. She responds to his initial resentment at her presence with icy put-downs. However, she soon gains an appreciation for the Doctor's experience and sense of adventure, and begins to respect him as a teacher.
Over time, Romana begins to take some of the characteristics of the screaming 'damsel in distress', and, at the start of 'Destiny of the Daleks' Romana chooses to regenerate, emerging with a different physical appearance and a lighter personality.
Race: Time Lady
Time of Origin: Gallifrey
Planet of Origin: Rassilon Era
The introduction of Romana's second incarnation appears in 'Destiny of the Daleks'. At the beginning of the serial, Romana changes bodily forms several times, rather like someone casually trying on different outfits, before deciding to take the form of Princess Astra.
Romana II comes across as much mire light hearted and easy going and enjoys a more intimate relationship with the Doctor than her predecessor.
Her final appearance in 'Warriors' Gate', shows her leaving the Doctor, accompanied by the robot dog K-9, to forge her own path in the parallel universe of E-space.

Name: Adric
Race: Alzarian
Time of Origin: Unknown
Planet of Origin: Alzarius
Adric first appears in 'Full Circle'. Attempting to escape from the mysterious Mistfall that is threatening his community, he stumbles across the TARDIS, which has been drawn into E-Space via a wormhole. He stowed away when the TARDIS left Alzarius and, when discovered, becomes a companion.
With a brilliant mathematical mind and sporting a star-shaped badge for mathematical excellence, Adric is also very well aware of his own intelligence. This, coupled with his relative immaturity, leads to a personality that is abrasive and crosses over into arrogance. However, it is obvious that Adric also desperately seeks validation from the Doctor and is often hurt and resentful if he feels he is being sidelined or unable to contribute.
Adric is present during the Fourth Doctor's regeneration and continues to travel in the TARDIS with the new Doctor, but his travels come to an end in 'Earthshock' when he tries to stop a ship from crashing into prehistoric Earth. He dies in the crash, while his fellow crewmates watch in horror on the TARDIS viewscreen.
Adric's death affects the Doctor deeply, as he feels somehow respnsible - Adric's name is the last word the Fifth Doctor says regenerates.
Race: Human
Time of Origin: 1981
Planet of Origin: Earth
Tegan first appears in 'Logopolis'. On her way to Heathrow Airport to start her new job, her car suffers a flat tire. She enters a roadside police box to seek help, not knowing that it is actually the TARDIS. She is present when the Fourth Doctor falls from the a radio telescop and regenerates
Tegan is stubborn, loud, and direct, with a no-nonsense manner and not afraid to speak her mind. While she often bickers with her companions as well as with the Doctor, her strength of character keeps them together and her loyalty to her fellow crewmates is unquestionable.
Despite her strong front, however, her adventures with the Doctor, both thrilling and terrifying, eventually take a psychological toll. She is deeply upset by the death of Adric. After being left behind in Heathrow due to a misunderstanding at the end of 'Time-flight', she returns to the TARDIS later in 'Arc of Infinity'.
Eventually, the loss of several of her friends and the carnage surrounding the events of 'Resurrection of the Daleks' prove too much and she bids an emotional good-bye to the Doctor and Turlough in 1984 London.
Race: Trakenite
Time of Origin: 1981
Planet of Origin: Traken
Nyssa is an aristocratic native of Traken. She aids the Doctor and Adric when the Master wrests control by murdering her stepmother. She herself is hypnotised and kidnapped by the Master after he takes control of her father's body.
After being freed from his control, she is brought to Logopolis and discovers that Traken has been destroyed as a side effect of the Master's tampering. She subsequently joins the TARDIS crew, and witnesses the Fourth Doctor's regeneration into the Fifth.
During her adventures, Nyssa displays a profound ability to draw as well as a previously unseen psychic ability when she is contacted by the Xeraphin.
When the TARDIS crew arrive on the derelict space station, Nyssa's adventures with the Doctor come to an end, as – to Tegan's horror – she elects to stay on board the Space Station in order to help free the enslaved guards and turn the station into a real hospital.
