Diaries

500/900 year old Diary

As briefly seen in the classic episode "The Power of the Daleks" and among the 7th Doctor's possesions, as well as in the Doctor Who movie, the Doctor does own a large diary that covers a extraordinary amount of years.

We've never seen whats inside the diary, nor has it even been seen in the new series of Who. But we can assume its probably lying about in the TARDIS somewhere.

The Journal of Impossible Things

Featured in episodes Human Nature and Family if Blood and belonging to The Doctor's other persona John Smith. To him, it's a sort of dream diary containing notes and sketches that are referred to by Smith as 'stories'. The scribbled words and charcoal pencil sketches, record what Smith remembers about his dreams of adventures as the Doctor.

Within the Journal, there are repeated phrases describing key concepts - such as 'magic box', referring to a picture of the TARDIS. These are abound in the handwritten text, along with many misspellings. One repeated phrase, 'bigger inside than outside', also appears as the Latin phrase 'Maius Intra Qua Extra'.

There is a two page spread within the book which depicts all the ten Doctors to date. The ones seen on screen in Human Nature are the First, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Doctors. The Journal also features sketches of:
  • Rose Tyler
  • K-9
  • Autons
  • Clockwork Droids
  • Cybermen
  • Daleks
  • The Moxx of Balhoon
  • Gas-mask zombies
  • The Slitheen
  • The sonic screwdiver
  • The TARDIS interior and exterior
  • Hexagons resembling the Torchwood logo or Gallifreyan lettering
After introducing the Journal to Joan Redfern - Smith's love - Smith notes how it would be wonderful if these 'stories' were true, and Joan is heard commenting that the character of 'The Doctor' might be the person Smith wishes he were... which is quite ironic.

As the Family get closer to the watch and Martha needs The Doctor back, Smith begins denying the things he wrote in the Journal, such as the TARDIS and who he really was. At some points it appears that he cannot even remember what he himself put in the Journal, such as mentioning the first world war that would begin the next year.

At the end of Family of Blood, The Doctor leaves the journal with Joan, possibly so she can remember him, or possibly because he didn't want to remember her.

River Song's Diary

Only even seen in Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, this diary, which looks extraordinarily like the TADIS was kept by the Doctor's future companion River Song.

When River first meets the Doctor, she flicks through the diary to try and find out where on the Doctor's timeline he has come from, little knowing that this is a much earlier Doctor, who has never met her before.

Because of this, River refuses to let the Doctor look inside her diary because of the "spoilers" it contains about his life.

At the end of the episode, the Doctor seemingly leaves River's diary in the Library. He most likely does this because he knows the Library will have to be abandoned due to the Vashta Nerada, so the Library would be the safest place to keep it away from anyone wanting to find out about the Doctor, and from himself and his own temptations.

I cannot wait for the stolen earth now - silence in the library and forest of the dead were probably some of the scariest episodes because the Doctor said: "Daleks aim for the eyestalk, sontarans back of the neck, vashta nerada... run."
