Mobile Phones

The Mobile Phones are used by The Doctor's companions, Rose and Martha throughout the new series. This common item has often helped character communication in order to prevent huge end-of-world disaters. But these are not just ordinary phones, they are also equipped with a special devise...

It was first introduced through compnaion Rose in the episode End of the World. where The Doctor modifies Rose's phone with a special device that goes in place of the battery.
Martha Jones also is granted this special privaledge in the episode 42. Here, The Doctor uses his sonic screwdriver to upgrade her phone and give it 'Universal Roaming'.

Features
  • Calls can be made to any point in time and space as long as the area code in known.
  • It also calibrates to the user's home time period. Adam Mitchell in The Long Game is able to call his home time on Rose Tyler's phone, despite their time periods being about a decade apart.
  • The upgraded phones can send signals in places ordinary phones cannot.
  • The universal roaming doesn't seem to work when the TARDIS is out of range, suggesting the signal is aquired through the time machine.
Arch Angel Network
Introduced through Martha's phone, and becomes a vocal point of the final episodes of series 3, it is a worldwide phone network set up through fifteen satellites stationed arounf the Earth.

These satellites create a low-level, worldwide telepathic field which allows influence over the behavior of the entire planet. This is shown when the British public is persuaded to vote for
The Master for prime minister, and also used by The Master in order to keep the entire human race afraid of him. It also masks The Masters his Time Lord nature from the Doctor, so he does not sense him.

This extreme power is later backfired on The Master however, when The Doctor is able to use the network against him. After Martha travels the world and convinses every person to say The Doctor's name at an exact point in time, The Doctor is able to channel the combined psychic energy of the entire human race, and rejuvanate himself.

In the episode just shown (The doctor's daughter) or the one before it, didn't the doctor borrow Donna's phone to call martha, but before he rang her, didn't he use the sonic screwdriver on it so that he could call her? Does this suggest that Donna's phone has also been upgraded?

wouldnt need to be upgraded as they are at the same point in time, and on the same planet. But just writing this didnt donna use the phone on a space ship or was that the tardis phone?

I don't know about your question, but i still think that the doctor used his sonic screwdriver on donna's phone, because i remember it. Perhaps it's worth rewatching it (if anyone has a copy) to see if he does or not. I could be wrong, but I was pretty sure that it happened.

He used Martha's phone. At the start of "The Sontaran Startagem" he answered the phone. He then kept it as he phoned Martha's clone after visiting Rattagan Academy. He probably just kept the phone in his pocket, and then used it. He may also have given Donna her upgrade off screen or even given her Martha's old phone!

Under "Archangel Network", there's a typo: "fifteen satellites stationed arounf the Earth." Devise was also used somewhere on the page instead of device.

Lovely site, by the way. Loads of information regarding the series. Honestly, I'd have to say it's one of the best, if not THE best site I've seen for Doctor Who.

The Doctor did indeed upgrade Donna's phone. Episode 6, at about 14mins 10seconds into the episode The Doctor said to Donna in the cell, "Donna give me your phone, time for an upgrade" he then used it to phone Martha.
